BONDS AND OBLIGATIONS OF CERTAIN LENDING AGENCIES Whoever falsely makes, forges, counterfeits or alters any note, bond, debenture, coupon, obligation, instrument, or writing in imitation or purporting to be in imitation of, a note, bond, debenture, coupon, obli- gation, instrument or writing, issued by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Home Owners' Loan Corporation, Farm Credit Administration, Federal Housing Administration, Federal Farm Mortgage Corporation or any land bank, intermediate credit bank, bank for cooperatives or any lending, mortgage, insurance, credit or savings and loan corporation or associ- ation authorized or acting under the laws of the United States, shall be fined not more than $10,000 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both. Whoever passes, utters, or publishes, or attempts to pass, utter or publish any note, bond, debenture, coupon, obligation, instrument or document knowing the same to have been falsely made, forged, coun- terfeited or altered, contrary to the provisions of this section, shall be fined not more than $10,000 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both. § 494. CONTRACTORS' BONDS, BIDS, AND PUBLIC RECORD8 Whoever falsely makes, alters, forges, or counterfeits any bond, bid, proposal, contract, guarantee, security, official bond, public record affidavit, or other writing for the purpose of defrauding the United States; or Whoever utters or publishes as true or possesses with intent to utter or publish as true, any such false, forged, altered, or counterfeited writing, knowing the same to be false, forged, altered, or counter- feited; or Whoever transmits to, or presents at any office or to any officer of the United States, any such false, forged, altered, or counterfeited writing, knowing the same to be false, forged, altered, or counter- feited- Shall be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both. § 495. CONTRACTS, DEEDS, AND POWERS OF ATTORNEY Whoever falsely makes, alters, forges, or counterfeits any deed, power of attorney, order, certificate, receipt, contract, or other writing, for the purpose of obtaining or receiving, or of enabling any other person, either directly or indirectly, to obtain or receive from the United States or any officers or agents thereof, any sum of money; or Whoever utters or publishes as true any such false, forged, altered, or counterfeited writing, with intent to defraud the United States, knowing the same to be false, altered, forged, or counterfeited; or Whoever transmits to, or presents at any office or officer of the United States, any such writing in support of, or in relation to, any account or claim, with intent to defraud the United States, knowing the same to be false, altered, forged, or counterfeited- Shall be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both. § 496. CUSToMS ArTTERS Whoever forges, counterfeits or falsely alters any writing made or required to be made in connection with the entry or withdrawal of im- ports or collection of customs duties, or uses any such writing knowing the same to be forged, counterfeited or falsely altered, shall be fined not more than $10,000 or imprisoned not more than three years, or both. 711
