SEC. 512. (a) Subject to subsection (d)(2), the maximum amount of financial assistance which may be provided under this subtitle to an owner of an existing residential building for the purchase and installation of a solar energy system in such building, or to a purchaser or builder of a newly constructed or substantially rehabilitated residential building which has such a system, may not exceed— (1) in the case of an owner or purchaser whose income does not exceed an amount equal to 80 percent of the median area income— (A) an amount equal to 60 percent of the cost of the solar energy system; or (B) $5,000 in the case of a residential building with one dwelling unit, $7,500 in the case of a residential building with 2 dwelling units, or $10,000 in the case of a residential building with 3 or 4 dwelling units, whichever is less; (2) in the case of an owner or purchaser whose income exceeds an amount equal to 80 percent, but does not exceed an amount equal to 160 percent of the median area income— (A) an amount equal to 50 percent of the cost of the solar energy system; or (B) $5,000 in the case of a residential building with one dwelling unit, $7,500 in the case of a residential building with 2 dwelling units, or $10,000 in the case of a residential building with 3 or 4 dwelling units, whichever is less; (3) in the case of an owner or purchaser whose income exceeds an amount equal to 160 percent of the median area income— (A) an amount equal to 40 percent of the cost of the solar energy system; or (B) $5,000 in the case of a residential building with one dwelling unit, $7,500 in the case of a residential building with 2 dwelling units, or $10,000 in the case of a residential building with 3 or 4 dwelling units, whichever is less; and (4) in the case of a builder of a residential building— (A) an amount equal to 40 percent of the cost of the solar energy system; or (B) $5,000 in the case of a residential building with one dwelling unit, $7,500 in the case of a residential building with 2 dwelling units, or $10,000 in the case of a residential building with 3 or 4 dwelling units, whichever is less.
