me; I started up, upon which the thing panted still harder, and ran away. I pursued it so long, that at last I saw a glimmering light that came from a hole in the rock, just large enough for a man to get out at. I crept through the hole, and found myself on the sea-shore. I leave you to judge of the excess of my joy. When I recovered from my surprise, I perceived I had been pursuing a sea monster.

I fell on my knees to thank God for my deliverance, and having feasted on some shell fish I found on the shore, I returned to the cave, and groped about among the coffins for all the diamonds, rubies, pearls, gold bracelets, and rich stuff I could find. These I carried to the sea shore, and tying them up into bales, with the cords that let down the coffins, I laid them on the beach, waiting till some ship should sail by.
