For the following listed authors I could not identify a matching hymn author:
- "A—. J—."
- "Carrington, C—"
- "Ellis, —"
- "Fitzherbert, Miss"
- "King, H— R—"
- "Newell, Mr. —"
- "Reece, J—"
- "Sims, Mr. T—", unless it is a duplicate of "Sims, Thomas"
- "Smith, William, M—" could be William Smith, the co-author (with William Little) of The Easy Instructor, whose 2nd ed. was published in 1805; however Little is not listed in this document, and nowhere have I seen this co-author listed with "M" as an initial.
There are a few authors who I was able to identify, but I was not able do discover their given name:
- "Cocks, Mrs. S—", author of Original Hymns for the Family and the Closet, 1831
"Dewhurst, Mrs. E— H—"→ Eliza Holland Dewhurst (per Billinghurst's comment below), co-author with Henry William Dewhurst (the zoologist) of The Diadem: a collection of poems, moral and religious, London 1839
- Eliza Holland Dewhurst, née Campbell, b. 1807, m. 1825, d. 1848
- Henry William Dewhurst, b. 9 June 1805, m.(2) 1853, no date of death identified —unsigned comment by Billinghurst (talk) .
- "Gyfford, R— Jun.", author of Lyric Poems on the Attributes of the Deity (or Supreme Being; no date, but is mentioned in indices as early as 1813)
- "James, Mr. M—", author of A Selection of the Most Beautiful Versions of Psalms and Excellent Hymns, 1739
- "Jesse, —", author of "Unclean, unclean, and full of sin", 18th c.
"Montgomery, P— V— G—"→ Percy Vernon Gordon de Montgomery, author of Prose and Verse, 1856- "Spire, R—", author of A Hymn Book for the Services of our Church, 1758
- "Washbourne, Mrs. S—" of Hammersmith, author of Hymns adapted to family and village worship[1], 1822
- "W—gt—n, J— W—" of Liverpool, author of "How sovereign is the love of God", 1777, and several others from Gospel Magazine. An entry for J. W-gt-n is included in Thomas Wright (1810-1877)'s The Lives of the British Hymn Writers, vol. 2, but I could not obtain a copy of this work.
There are several listed at 1806, which refers to A New Selection of more than eight hundred Evangelical Hymns [2] by John Dobbel. The first names are not cited and some appear to be lost.
"Bennett, —"→ Marjorie Bennett (see discussion below), author of "Convinc'd as a sinner, to Jesus I come""Brainard, —"→ David Brainerd, author of "Farewell vain world, your charms I bid adieu"- "Chappel, —" (or Chappell), author of "Salvation, how precious the sound", also "Chappell"
- "Cheater, —", author of "O what a pleasure 'tis to see"
- "Farwell, Mrs. —" (or Farewell), author of "Ye fleeting charms of earth, farewell"
"Hayward, —"→ Thomas Hayward, author of "Welcome, delightful morn"- "Kemp, Miss —", author of "Sun of Righteousness divine"
"Kingsbury, —"→ William Kingsbury, author of "Let us awake our joys" and "Great God, of all thy churches hear""Knight, —"→ Joel Abel (or Abraham or Asaac) Knight, author of "Fain would my soul with wonder trace", "Once more my eyes behold the day", and "Alas! how changed that lovely flower".- "Olding, Miss —", author of "My Father calls me to his arms"
- "Perry, —", author of "Let earth and seas, with all the skies" and "Sinners rejoice, it's Christ that died"; possibly the same as Miss A. S. Perry author of "Out of the darkness into the light"
- "Phippard, —", author of "Let Joshua's solemn charge", "Thee, Father, we praise, In harmonious lays", "Thee God we praise, Thee Lord confess", "Ye sin sick souls draw near, And banquet with your king"
- "Shoveller, Mr. —", author of "What does the worldling gain"
- "Strateer, —", author of "Lo he comes the king of glory"
- "Symonds, —", credited by Dobell as "Symond's Col[lection]", author of a collection from which were taken "Backsliders, who your mis'ry feel" and "Glory, honour, praise, and power". Not to be confused with hymnist John Addington Symonds, who was not yet born in 1806.
- "Thursby, —" (or H. S. Thursby or Thornby), alterer of Richard Burdsall's "The voice of Free Grace cries escape to the mountian"
- "Unwin, —", author of "Behold the sun adorns the sky" and "Methinks I hear the archangel sound"
"Voke, Mrs. —"(or Vokes) → Bourne Hall Draper, author of several hymns, believed to be (probably) a pseudonym of Draper by current scholarship. The following authors
need to behave been disambiguated from existing authors; most of them using (hymnist) as I could find no other disambiguating information.
Faulkner, William→ William Faulkner (hymnist) vs. William FaulknerFoster, William→ Frederick William Foster vs. William FosterMason, William→ William Mason (1725–1797) vs William Mason (1719–1791)Smith, Thomas→ Thomas Smith (hymnist) vs. Thomas SmithVaughan, Thomas→ Thomas Vaughan (hymnist) vs. Thomas VaughanWest, John→ John West (hymnist) vs. John WestWilson, Thomas→ Thomas Wilson (hymnist) vs. Thomas WilsonWright, John→ John Wright (hymnist) vs. John WrightYoung, John→ John Young (hymnist) vs. John YoungOther notes:
- "Greig, Mr. —" and "Grigg, Joseph" are listed separately. However, Joseph Grigg did publish an original hymn in 1744, and he is referred to as "Joseph Greig" in Wilson's History and Antiquities of Dissenting Churches and Meeting Houses (1810), as quoted in The Poets of the Church[3] by Edwin Francis Hatfield. I am linking them both as to Joseph Grigg.
- "R—. S— P—." is the signature of "Sons we are through God's election" in Gospel Magazine, 1777, which was attributed to John Adams (1751–1835) by his son, the rev S. Adams
- "Ryland, John" and "Ryland, Dr John" appear to be the same person, as original hymns by John Ryland were published in 1775 and more were published in 1826. It is possible that Sedgwick confused him with his father John Collett Ryland, also an author. In the 2nd edition there is only one John Ryland listed.

Comment I think we are unlikely to get many more authors definitively identified and will need to work out the best means to have author pages for them. Probably worth coming up with a few proposals and the n seeking community endorsement for what we consider the best. — billinghurst sDrewth 20:58, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
