Comments edit

This is currently a work in progress. I find most of this book to be very interesting so I hope others will also. I don't know how long it will take to finish, but hopefully I'll be able to stick with it and get it done fairly soon. Any comments about the format or anything else are appreciated! -SCEhardT 16:22, 21 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Update: I am scanning all the pages of the book for later reference. The pages scanned thus far are at commons:Category:The How and Why Library pages SCEhardT 18:03, 22 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
That is really great I was hope the rest of these page would turn up! Since you are adding them all I am converting this to the new proofreading standard for scanned images. I have already converted and proofread The How and Why Library/Introduction; The How and Why Library/Foreword; The How and Why Library/Geography; The How and Why Library/Geography/Section I. To see the advantage of the new system look at Page:How and Why Library 010.jpg. I set up an index of all the pages you have uploaded so far at Index:How and Why Library--BirgitteSB 21:57, 22 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
All of the pages are now uploaded! -SCEhardT 03:26, 27 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
That is great! I will keep moving forward with proofreading and getting things displayed in the Main: namespace. I do not have any OCR software, so inputting the OCR into the Page: space is something I cannot do. I also have limited access to photoshop so I will only be able extract images from the scans occasionally. Also I moved around the pages in "The Story of Life". Comparing that to the other divisions of the book I find that the Plants/Animals sections are not really proper divisions. So I set-up the pages as being under .../Life/... instead of .../Plants/...--BirgitteSB 14:26, 27 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am in possession of the 1934 edition of the book How and Why Library Book Three pages 442 to 648 which does not include extra pages that are kind of like "inserts" that are pictures both in the book and at the end after 648. Possibly I could scan them. A teacher. --A teacher (talk) 22:05, 15 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Proofreading edit

As I am proofreading the Geography sections I am finding that there is one are that needs were we need to take some editorial liberty. That is in the references the the New Students Reference Work. Either they were working from a slightly different edition than our copy, or they never really proofread the references carefully. Sometimes thing have slightly different names then what was published. Other times they use a different formatting or omit the the page numbers they give on other occasions. In any case I am making the link with by best guess as I do the initial proofread. I plan on going back later and not only making sure the links are correct, but adding the NSRW articles where they are red links.--BirgitteSB 13:13, 24 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Makes sense to me! Any idea how to format pages like this one? I'm at a loss for what to do with the side notes. Sometimes they appear in the middle of a long paragraph and I don't know of any formatting trick to stick something partway through a paragraph without messing up the flow. Also, should the script writing at the bottom just be reproduced in normal text or is there something special that can be done with it? -SCEhardT 20:38, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think we should probably make some kind of quote box for the script quotations and mimic it as best we can. I am sure someone has made something useful at WP for a user page, where we could just remove the background color and border. See below on shoulder headings.--BirgitteSB 13:59, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Looks great! I'll check around WP for some quote box code. -SCEhardT 18:53, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
