Translation:Mishnah/Seder Moed/Tractate Eruvin/Chapter 1/3

Introduction edit

One of the methods of making an eruv in certain mavois (alleyways) is to erect a korah across the entrance. A korah is essentially a beam that must fit to certain specifications. This mishnah will begin to enumerate the physical dimensions necesary for a korah to be valid.

Hebrew Text edit

קורה שאמרו, רחבה לקבל אריח; והאריח, חצי לבינה של שלושה טפחים.
דייה לקורה שתהא רחבה טפח, כדי אריח לאורכו.

English Translation edit

edit
The beam which was mentioned, it must be wide enough to hold an ariah, and an ariah is half a brick of three tefachim.
It is okay for the beam to be a tefach wide so that it can hold the ariah sideways.

Explanation edit

According to this mishnah, a korah must be at least one tefach wide. Other issues relating to the korah will be addressed in later mishnas.
