AS ONE WHO LEAVES HIS BIRTHPLACE WHEN A CHILD.

As one who leaves his birthplace when a child.
And grows, transplanted to another site,
All but forgetful of the scenes that smiled
Into those years a formative delight.
Who then returns to stroll about the spot
And spy on his own infancy, there start
Dim intimations of the past, deep-wrought.
Imperishable legends of the heart;
So the American that stands once more
On English soil where his forefathers stood,
Church-yard and park are half-remembered lore,
And shadowy recollections throng the wood.
The ancient rings lie ever at the core,
And England's image sleeps in English blood.
