Little Rock schoolteacher Susie Morris sued school district officials for racial discrimination by paying black teachers less than white teachers. In Morris v. Williams, 59 F.Supp. 508 (E.D. Ark. 1944), U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Clark Trimble III ruled against Morris after finding that she failed to prove the district had discriminated on the basis of race. Judge Trimble's ruling was reversed on appeal. Morris v. Williams, 149 F.2d 703 (8th Cir. 1945).

Morris's attorneys at trial included Scipio Africanus Jones, who died before this case was over, and Thurgood Marshall, future justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
