*BEGHARDS, [i. e. hard-beggars,] feminine BEGUINES, do called from their importunity in prayer, and sometimes taken more literally; this was a term applied (like Methodists) to not less than thirty petty sects of very different characters in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.[1]
