און m. (b. h.; או, v. foreg.; cmp. חבל, חיל, חזקה a. next w.) possession, power. Tosef. Ab. Zar. III, 16 (IV, beg.) אונו לו כתב if he (the seller of the slave) wrote to him (gave him in writing) the liberty of his dlsposal of himself, i.. e. that the slave, if he should run away from the buyer, would not be claimed by him who sold him; Git. 43b אונו עליו כתב (read אליו or לו). Ib. אונו מאי what means his own possession'? Ans. He wrote to himmm this, llf thou run away from him (the purchaser), Ihave nothing to do with thee. Ib. 85b. -- [Y. B. Mets. I, end, 8a; Y. Kid. אינא I, אוונא, אוונא m. (v. foreg. ws.; cmp. גנן, חנה, חון, a. עונה, מעון) [circlel, night- lodging, station for travellers (v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Mansio). Naz. 7a אוו׳ כל וא׳ every station. B. Mets. 79b; Ab. Zar. 65a לא׳ מא׳ from station to station. -- Deut. R. s. 6 she dared to bring dis- order into מלך של אוננא (read אוונא or אוונה, v. infra) the royal head quarters. Pl. אוונין, אוונין. אונא II, אוונא pr. n. pl. (v. foreg.) Avana, on the Tigris. Kid. 71b וא׳ אכברא Ar. ed. Koh (oth. ed. Ar. אכבדא); Talm. ed. ואוונא בגדא [Var. בגדת] Okhbara and Avana as bordertowns of Babylonia (v. De Sacy Chrest. Ar. I, p. 3b8 sq.; Koh. in Ar. s. v.). *אונא, א׳ נקיס pr. n. m. Nakis Una(?), a gentile name. Git. 11a.
אונא f. (contr. of אודנא, cmp. however און) 1) ear, v. pl. -- 2) handle of a vessel. Git. 69b. Sabb. 108a top. -- 3) lobe of a lung. Hull. 59b; a. fr. - Pl. אוני. Ib. 38a א׳ אזוזי moving the ears (as a sign of life in the last stages). Yeb. 60b מאוניך . . . מפיקנא we shall get R. . . out of thy ears, i. e. we shall make thee give up thy authority (a threat of excommunication). Gen. R. s. 45 דחמר אוניך thy ears are those of an ass. -- Hull. 47a וכ׳ אוני ה׳ the lungs have five lobes; a. fr. אונאה f. (יני; cmp. הונאה) 1) oppression, wrong. B. Mets. 58b ממון מא׳ דברים אונאת גדולה the wrong yuu. do by means of words (wounding one's feelings) is worse than that by pecuniary imposition. Ib. 59a לעולם וכ׳ אשתו באונאת . . . . יהא one should always be on his guard not to wound his wife's feeling, for as her tears are frequent מרובה אונאתה so is her sense of wrong (sensibility) deep. -- 2) (aw) imposition, overreaching, fraudulent representattion (which invalidates the trans- action or requires redress); hence, redress in case of over. reaching. Y. B. Mets. IV, 9d top, a. fr. whoever concludes a bargain וכ׳ א׳ לו שאין במנת with the provision that no legal redress shall be resorted to, is notwithstanding entitled to redress. -- Denomin. Verb (אונה), Hithpa. התאונה to be imposed upon, to feel one's self overreached. Y. B. Mets. IV, 9d top. וכ׳ מתאונה שהמוכר בשעה if the seller sues for undue advantage taken of him, he has the privilege of redress, provided the advantage amounts to one fifth or more of the price charged; if the buyer sues &c. XXXIII, 19) וכ׳ הא׳ כותב הא יו״ד Pod He (i. e. the Lord) writes the deed; the Lord bears witness to the deed. -- Pl. אונות. B. אוני I אונית (אונו) f. =אונה, cmp. אוניתא. [The phon- etir coincidence with oov produced the peculiar use of our w. in connection with Greek terms, in the Palest. literature.] Gen. R. s. 2 beg. וכ׳ ובטימי אחת בא׳ in one bill of sale and for the same price. Y. Pes. IV, 31b bot. וכ׳ היא בא׳ מיסתיוסיס (read מיסתוס׳) it is a lease with a. title of possession (for the term), and is (for the time being) an acquisition like a purchase. Y. Kid.
