אמתלא (Y. מתלא) m. (cmp. h. משל) something tangible (=ממש בו שיש דבר); plausible reason for cor- recting or retracting an evidence. Keth. 22a א׳ נתנה אם וכ׳ if she offers a reasonable explanation of her contra- dictory statements, her second one is accepted. Gitt. IX, 9 א׳ שם יהא שלא ובלבד provided no reasonable explanation is otfered to show how the report may have arisen by mistake; a. fr. V. מתלא.
אמתלאי pr. n. f. Amathlai, legendary name of Abraham's mother (כרנבו בת א׳), and of Haman's mother (עורביתא בת א׳). B. Bath. 9 1a.
