אספקלריא, איס׳ f. (specularia) 1) window-pane made of lapis specularis, window-glass. Targ. Y. Ex. XIX, 17; a. e. - Kel. XXX, 2 א׳ שעשאו תמחוי a (lass) plate which is used as window-glass. -- 2) Metaph. pro- phetic vision. Succ. 45b וכ׳ בא׳ דמסתכלי who contemplate (Deity) through a lucid speculum. Gen. R. s. 91 שראה וכ׳ שסברו בא׳ (play on sheber, grain, and seber, hope) he saw in the glass of prophecy that his hope (Joseph) was in Egypt. Lev. *אספר (ספיר), Snh. 106a רב אמר (כתים מיד וצים) א׳ ליבון ed. [missing in Ms. M. and added on margin; Ar. ed. pr. a. ed. Koh. א׳ לכין; Yalk. Num. 771 לגיון לא א׳] pr. n. m. (Amv bruupo~, Leo Isaurus) Leo the Isaurian, Byzantine emperor, leader of the iconoclastic movement which caused a long-continued war between the East and the West of the empire. [The words above quoted are an interpolation of the eighth or ninth cen- tury, and refer to 'the war between the lion and the lioness'- words immediately preceding our quotation. The interrupted context in Rashi a. l. shows that the commentary to our ws. is also a later addition and that in Rashi's Talmud text there was no such interpolation. אספר m. (ספר, cmp. אספור) Espar, a Hebrew name for Sestertius (cmp. איסר &c.). Pl. const. אספרי. Maas. Sh. II, 9 (Ms. M. אצטרי, v. איסתירא, Asheri אצפרי); Eduy. I, 10 (he must exchange the fourth Denar) אארבעה כסף א׳ Ms. M. (ed. ארבע) for four sestertii. [Oth. opin- ions (v. comment.), (~ftpot, supposed to be worth one fifth of a Denar. There is, however, no evidence of (foo. being used in this sense in the days of the Mishnah.]
