אשישה f. (b. h., אשש) anything made compact and substantial by pressing, whence ) cake, pan-cake (in Bible pressed raisin-cake). Pes. 36b excluding from 'bread of misery', וא׳ חלוט pudding and pan-cake. [Talmudic etymology, ibid., 'one sixth of an epha of flour made into a cake'.] Y. ib. II, 29b bot. -- Bab. ib. l. c. Samuel says וכ׳ גרבא א׳ ashishah (IISam. VI, 19) means a jug of wine (v. preced.). - Pl. זאשישות(bb. h.). Hull. 124b סמכוני היום אני בא׳ to me to-day the Bibl. words apply, Support me with cakes' (Cant. II, 5); Bets. 21a. -- 2) pl. אשישים, אשישין cakes made ofboiled lentils impregnated with honey. Ned. אשיתא or אשיתא, אושיתא f. (=h. אשיה Jer. L, 15, K'thib אשויה; שוי, cmp. שית) [meshes, layers, v. אשותא a. אורבא,] frame-wall. B. Bath. 7a. אשכבתא II f. (preced.) butcher's shop. דא׳ סכינא butcher's dissecting knife [Tosaf. slaughtering knife]. B. Mets. 116a; Sabb. 123b.
אשכול, אשכל m. (b. h. cmp. סגל) bunch, cluster (of grapes). Y. Naz. II, beg. 51d וכ׳ לא׳ קראת תורה the Bible calls the(berry in the) cluster must (tirosh, ref. to Is. LXV, 8) while people (at present) call the dried berry must (i. e. in common parlance abstinence from 'berry' means from grapeuice, must &c.). -- בצים של אשכול the ovary (of birds). Tosef. Zab. V, 9; Bets. 7a. -- Midd. III, 8 זהב א׳של a gold imitation of a cluster of grapes. -- 2)rnsf. a distinguished scholar (opp. עלין leaves= tthe gnorant); v. infra. Cant. R. to I, 14, a. e. אשכרא m. (prob. a denom. of כר) a wagon, wagon- load; [b. h. אשכר gift, tribute; cmp. Is. XVI, 1. Pl. אשכרין. Targ. Is. V, 10 (h. text צמד). Targ. II Esth. I, 3 ומרגליין א׳ (read דמ׳) loads (gifts) of &c. (after Ps. LXXII, 10).
אשכרוע m. (v. P. Sm. 408) box-tree or ebony tree [prob. a denom. of חשד=אשך, cmp. גושקראl. Neg. II, 1 וכ׳ שחורים לא כא׳ like the eshk'roa, neither black nor white but of an intermediate color. B. Bath 89b אשב׳ ed. (corr. acc., v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 30). Yoma III, 9 (8) א׳ של גורלות ballot tablets of box-wood (cmp. Sm. Ant. s. v. Buxum); expl. Y. ib. 41a top פוקס==פסקינין (~~avov).
