בארג m. (dial. for ברקא, v. ברק a. deriv.; cmp. באגא. a. בקעא) sparkling, efervescent; whiteshining. Ab. Zar. 30a ב׳ חמר מתוק Ar. (ed. ב׳ מי) by 'sweet wine' we under- stand effervescent wine (liquid) (mulsum vinum or mitlsצ agua, v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Vinum). --Snh. 98a ב׳ סוסיא quot. in Rashi to Ab. Zar. l. c., Ar. s. v. ברקא (ed. ברקא) a. white-shining horse. [Deriv. fr. Pers. barah is refuted by ברקא being used as an equivalent of our w.; v. also rl. to Levy Talm. Dict. I, 284a.]

באש (b. h.; בא, v. בוא) to be disordered, bad (cmp. רע). Hif. הבאיש 1) to cause decay, to make smel badly. EEx. R. s. 26; a. e. - 2) (with דברים, or sub. דברים) to use insulting laanguage. Koh. R. to X, 1. -- 3) (neut. v.) to detteriorate, ferment, decay. Ter. X, 2 מימיו שה׳ אע״פ מותרין Ms. M. (ed. מימיו מימיו corr. acc.) though the barley hhas begun to ferment &c. Cant.R. to I, 2b מבאישים המים liquids grow stale. Pesik. B'shall. p. 81b מב׳ דג il smelling fish. - 4) (v. באושה) [to begin to ferment, to boit] to be in the early stage of ripening, to be b'ushah. בביתא I בבתא (בבייתא) f (cmp. בב a. בית)=h. בבה, [the innermost,] with צינא, pupil of the eye. Targ. O. Deut. XXXII, 10 ע׳ בבת (plur.) the pupils of their (the Israelites') eyes; [Targ. *בביתין m. pl. (fr. בבא or fr. בית) gate (or lodging) money, contribution for the support of traveling poor. Y. Dem. III, beg. 23b.
בבל (b. h.) pr. n. Babel, the city of Babylon; Baby- onia, a country of varying limits, chiefy comprising Mesopotamia, a portion of Great Armenia and some neighbouring countries east of the Tigris (v. Neub. Geogr. p. 320). [Owing to the continued political disturbances in Palestine, Babylonia gradually became the centre of Jewish scholarship; hence both the frequent comparisous and jealousies between the East and the West (Babyl. a.
