בורסיף (בולסיף) pr. n. pl. (Βορσιππα) Borsif, a city near the site of Babylon, frequently identified with Babel. Snh. 109a (phonetic etymol.) שפת בור Ar. (ed. שאפי, Var. שפיא; Yalk. בורסקי f. (βυρσικη, sub. τεχνη) 1) the tanning pro- cess, tannery, [fr..=ב בעל) the tanner; v. בורסיl. Sabb. I, 2 לב׳ ולא nor must one enter the tannery (to look after the process, shortly before Sabbath). Ib. 9b התחלת כ׳ the beginning of the tanner's work. בוש (b. h.; בה, v. בהת); (as adj.) m. confounded, abashed, ashamed. Zeb. 101a וכ׳ בוש ולא הודה he confessed and was not ashamed so as to say, l have not learned it', but he said &c.; ib.b (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.). - Hag. 22b אני==בושני בוש; Tosef. Ohol. V, 11 בושתי. Kidd. 81b בושה she is too bashful to &c. Keth. VIII, 1 בושין אנו we are confounded (to find a reason); a. fr. -- פנים בוש (not בושת) bashful, chaste. Aboth V, 20. Pi. בייש to put to shame, insult, disgrace. B. Kam. VIII, 1 הישן את המבייש he who exposes a sleeping person to shame. Ib. וב׳ הזיק he injured and exposed (a person at the same time). Ib. והמתבייש המב׳ לפי הכל all (the fine) according to the social position of the insulter and of the insulted. בושלא f. (בשל) 1) warm and moist (of a fresh stripped hide). Sabb. 79a בבו׳ התם Ar. (ed. בבישולה, early ed. בבושלה, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) there a fresh hide is meant (not dry enough for the first process of tanning). -- 2) l. בושלי ripened fruits. Ber. 40b כומרא ב׳ Ar. (ed. כמרא) figs ripened by shrinking (placed in the ground, Ar., overripe through exposure to the sun; Rashi).

בושת, בשת f. (b. h.; בוש) (freq. with פנים) shame, insult; bashfulness, chastity. Ber. 32a; a. fr. -- Keth. 67b וכ׳ של בושתה the shame of a woman (in remaining single). - Trnsf. (sub. דמי) indemnitty for exposure. B. Kam. VIII, 1 sq. Ib. 85b וכ׳ ליה דרק ב׳ an indictable insult (without physical injury) is (e. g.) spitting in one's face. Y. Yeb.
