בכיר m. h. a ch. (b. h. בכרה; בכר) early, first-ripen- ing, opp. לקיש or אפיל. Snh. 18b וכ׳ ולקיש ב׳ אם when the early and the late seeds blossom simultaneously &c.; Y. ib. I, 18c bot.; Y. R. Hash. I, 58b bot. (corr. acc.). Gen. R. s. 61; Koh. R. to XI, 6 (ref. to Koh. b.) זרעת אאם בב׳ if thou hast sown in the early season. Ib. הב׳ the early seed. Ib. to VII, 26 וכ׳ ב׳ לסטים לקיש (read ללס׳) the latest of the robbers is the first to be hanged. -- Fem. h. בכירה. Y. Taan. בכירותא, בכרותא f. ch. =h. בכורה 2). Targ. Gen. XXV, 31 (ed. Berl. בכו׳); a. fr. - Ber. 7b לבכירותיה זבנה (notזבניה) he (Esaw)sold his birthright;ib. בכירותיה שקלו ליוסף ויהביה מיניה Ms. M. (read ויהבוה; ed. incorr.) his (Reuben's) birthright was taken from him and given to Joseph (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note). בכר (b. h.; בד, v. בכי, cmp. בקר) [to break forth,] to be early. [Kal prob. not used] Pi. ביכר 1) to be early, produce frst fruits. Tanh. Vayhi 14; Gen. R. s. 99 (פירותיה) מבכרת has early crops, opp. מלקשת, מאפלת. [Ib. end מפירותיהם מבכרין read מכבדין, v. כבד.]-- 2) to bear for the first time (of animals). Bekh. I, 3 sq. ביכרה שלא that never before had given birth; a. fr. -- 3) (neut. v.) to be first in ripening. Bicc. III, 1 and sees שבכרה תאנה a fig which is first ripe, שביכר אשכול a cluster of grapes which &c. Y. Maasr. I, 49a top וכ׳ צמייא משיבכר, v. צמייא. Ib. בנות משביכירו שבע, v. ברת. Ib. ביכירו, משיבכרו (v. בחל as to spelling). -- 1) (b. h.) to recognize as first-born (בכור). B. Bath. 130a sq. Hif. הבכיר same. Bekh. בכר ch. same. - Pa. בכר 1) to produce, mature. Targ. Y. Deut. XXXIII, 14 וכ׳ דמבכרא which his land pro- duces. -- 2) to recognize as first-born. Targ. O. Deut. XXI, 16. Ithpa. אתבר to be dedicated as the first-born. Targ. O. Lev. XXVII, 26.

בל (b. h.; cmp. בלי, v. Ges. H. Dict. s. v.) not, frequ. used, in connection with a verb, in the sense of a pro- hibitive law. Erub. 100a תגרע בל על עובר he transgresses the law which says 'thou shalt not diminish therefrom' (Deut. XIII, 1). Pes. III, 3 וכ׳ יראה בבל עליו שמוזהרים concerning which we are cautioned by the law prohibit- ing leavened things to be seen or to be found (Ex. XIII, 7; XII, 19); a. v. fr. [Our w. is also applied to Bible texts in which לא appears.]
בל pr. n. Bel, the Babylonian deity. Ab. Zar. 11b בבבל ב׳ בית the temple of Bel in Babylon.

בלאות, בליות f. pl. of בלי; בלי) outworn garments. Keth. V, 8 וכ׳ בבלאותיהן מתכסה she wears her winter clothes in their outworn condition in the summer. Ib. 65b ב׳ מותר the entirely outworn clothes (=שחקים Mish. l. c.); a. fr. -- 2) the woman's right to claim compensation for te wear or ruin of the things which she brought along as her property (v. מלוג, a. ברזל צאן).
