בלימה (מה בלי) f. (b. h., v. כלי) [nothing,] air (fr. Job XXVI, 7). Nim. R. s. 14 ב׳ ספירות עשר (some ed. מה בלי) the ten heavenly spheres (cmp. Sepher Yetsir. beg.). Ex. R. s. 15 ב׳ על העולם אויר על . . . he rested it (the upper story, the sky) on the atmosphere, on b'limah (Tanh. Haye 3 האויר על מה על).

בליסטרא (בליצטרא) f. (ballistra, ~~~~~~~~) catapult, awar engine for throwing stones, or(b. manualis) for arrows. Lam. R. to II, 2 ב׳ אבני stones thrown from the catapult. Y. Sot. VIII, 22b bot. שלהן בליצטורא כנגד ברד; (Mekh. Bshall. s. 2 בלסטראות, pl.; Yalk. Ex. 232 בלסיטראות, read בליסט׳) the hail stones correspond to the catapults in the warfare of men. Pesik. בליסטרי (בליסטורי) m. (ballistarius, βαλιστα- tao~) attendant of the cataput, also archer. Hull. 60b היה ב׳ או. . . . was Moses a hunter or an archer (to have known the nature of animals so well)?

בליעה f. (בלע) 1) swallowing, gluttony. Num. R. s. 14 (play on בלע Gen. XXXVI, 32) he sold his birth- right בליעתו בשביל to satisfy his gluttony. -- הב׳ בית eso- phagus. Toh. I, 1; a. fr. -- 2) vortex, v. בלועה.
בליעי, ב׳ בי m. (=h. הבליעה בית, v. preced.) gullet, whence (cmp. ושט) straits (prob. ccylla and Chharybbdis). Bekh. 9a. -- Snh. 110c דקרח בלועי (corr. acc.) the chasm created for Korah.
בליעל m. (b. h.) availing nothing, wickedness. Snh. 111 (playing on עול) ב׳ בני means וכ׳ עול . . . בנים sons who shook off the yoke &c.
בליעתא f. ch. (=h. בליעה) swallowing, Targ. Y. I Num. XXVI, 11, constr. בליעת.

בליתא f. (בלי) rag, shred. Sabb. 134a. Hull. 8b ב׳ דפרסא a shred of a curtain (soft rag). Kidd. 48b בב׳ צייר tied up in a rag. -- Pl. בלייתא. Yeb. 120a (some ed. בליתא).
בלל (h. h.; בל; a) sec. r. of בול, ביל; בו, בה, cmp. בין, to penetrate, break through, v. בלט; b) I בל to crusmmble, soften, cmp. V מל; v. בלי, נבל, בלט in בולטיתא) to mix (with oil), knead, stir; to mix fodder. Zeb. XIV, 3 ( 12b) הבולל the priest who kneads the meat-offering with oil, v. בלילה. Dem. V, 5 ונוטל בולל (strike out ואוכל in Bab. ed., Ar. Var. בורר) he mixes the fruits and takes the tithe. Y. B. Kam. IV, beg. 4a לבלול to mix up (coins in a bag.) Y. R. Hash. I 56d bot.; Tanh. בלם I (b. h.; denom. of בלום, בל, בלל, fodder-bag, nose-bag, muzsle) to mugele, restrain. Yalk. Num. 743 (read in place of וכ׳ בלום כדו) משה של לעמו בלום פיו מהם אחד של צפורנו לבלום הוא יכול the mouth of the people of Moses is tied up (we dare not talk), but can he tie up (disable) the nail of any of them (the Canaan- ites)? Hull. s9a (play on בלימה, Job XXVI, 7) שבולם וכ׳ who restrains himselfiin strife (refrains from violence, keeps silence &c.). -- 2) part. pass. בלום (cmp. אלם) unfit for use, lame, sore, swollen, closed by a tumor. Bekh. 40b ב׳ פיו one whose mouth is swollen (one opin. in Rashi; shrunk); מבולמות רגליו (Pu.) one whose feet are swollen (shrumnk). Ib. 43b ב׳ חוטמו Ar. בלם II (v. preced.; cmp. Syr. בלמא halter) to attempt to gett rid oftthe halter; to kick, strike (of an unruly horse). Pesik. Zakh. p. 24b (ref. to Ps. XXXII, 9) thou puttest a. bit on him בולם והוא andhe strikes. Ib. ב׳ והוא לגביה קריב (strike out לא, as Tanh. ed. Bub. Ki Thetse, 6 a. Yalk. Ps. 719) you come near him and he strikes; Tanh. Ki Thetse, 6; Yalk. Deut. 938, Ps. l. c. (with var. vers.).
בלם ch.=h. בלם I. -1) Part. pass. בלים tied, mute. Targ. Is. XXXII, 4; a. e. [Targ. Y. Deut. XXIX, 4; v. בלי .]---2) (cmp. כרך) to put meat between bread, wrap up. Hull. 107b אומצא ליה ב׳ wrapped up a piece of mead for him (v. Tosaf. a. l.).
