בעי, בעה (b. h.; בע, akin to בה, בו, v. ביא, a) to enter into, split; b) to be empty, bare). Part. בועה, v. infra. Hif. הבעה to lay bare, destroy the crop. B. Kam. I, 1 המבעה damaging the crop (ref. to Ex. XXII, 4). Ib. 3b Rab says אדם זה מבעה the damaging force in the Mishnah means that of a human being (ransacking, searching)]ף for we read (Is. XXI, 12) בעיו תבעיון אם if ye desire to enter &c. (where בעה refers to human action); Samuel says, השן זה מבעה the mabeh of the Mishnah refers to the tooth, i. e. to an animal's eating up the crop, for it says (Obad. 6) מצפניו נבעו its hidden treasures were laid bare (made empty, -- which refers to eating up). Ib. (argument against Samuel) נבעה קתני מי the Mishnah does not use the Nifal (which may mean eaten up); (argument against Rab) בועה קתני מי the Mishnah does not use the Kal (which may refer to human action) but the Hifl 'to cause damage'-- tthrough the animal. -- Tosef. ib. בעי I, בעא ch. (v. preced.; cmp. בין) 1) to search, in- quire, ask, examine. Targ. Jud. VI, 29 (h. text בקש); a. fr. -- Ber. 2b וכ׳ האי מבעיא לה ובעו and pputiit as a question (not as an argument), Does this uba hash-shemesh mean &c. ? (opposed to preceding וכ׳ דהאי וממאיhow can it be proven that &c.). Y. Hall. I, 57b בעיין . . . רבנן the Rabbis of . . .. asked. B. Kam. 33a וכ׳ מרב . . . בעא R. asked R. N.; a. v. fr. -- 2) to ask, pray, frequ. רחמין ב׳ to ask for mercy, pray. Targ. Y. Num. XII, 13; a. fr. - Ber. 8a רחמי אינש לבעי man should pray &c., v. יבולאmז. Targ. Jer. L, 20; a. fr. - 2) to be urged, hurried. Targ. I Sam. XXIII, 26. Targ. II Sam. IV,׳ באתבעיותה when she was hurried; v. בעע. Ithpa. contr. איבעי 1) to be asked. Pes. 4b, a. v. fr. להו איבעיא it was asked by them (the scholars), i. e. the argument came up. -- 2) to be reguired; t ought to. Ib. 7b ליה מיבעי בו יצא it ought to read yatsa bo (he has done his duty). Ib. 15a ליה מ׳ מדבריו it ought to be midtddf'barav (not middibrehem); a. fr. - B. Kam. 21b לאסוקי ליה א׳ דעתא he ought to have borne in mind; a.fr. -- מיבעיא לא there is no question. אפילו אלא . . . . מ׳ לא there is no question as to . . . ., but even . . . .; not only . . . . but. בעי II (v. בעי, בעה) to open wide (the mouth), to yawn (of leopards). Targ. II Esth. I, 2 בעיין נמרין.
בעיא m. 1) (preced.) yawn, gap. Constr. בעי. לבא ב׳ greed. Targ. Prov. XXI, 4 (h. text לב רחב). - 2) (בעי I) question. Pl. בעיי. Snh. 106b ב׳ מאות ד׳ four hundred questions. Ib. ב׳ למבעי רבותא is there any greatness in asking questions?

בעייא f. (part. of בעי) desirous. Y. Taan. I 64b bot. וכ׳ ב׳ אנא I want to see what I can do to relieve him. -- Pl. m. בעיי. Ib.a top בעי הוא בעיי דאתון אימת whenever ye are desirous (that he should come), he is willing to.

בעיטה f. (בעט) 1) kicking. Y. B. Kam. I, beg. 2a (of animals). Bab. ib. 27b חמש לב׳ for kicking with one's foot &c. 2) beating (with one's fist). Men. VI, 5 (76a) בחטין וב׳ שיפה rubbing and beating refer to the prep- aration of the wheat of the meat-ofering (prior to grind- ig); R. Y. says בבצק (Mish. אף incorr.) beating refers to the dough. Ib. Gem. Var. בבצק וב׳ בחיטים שיפה;Tosef. ib. VIII, 14.
בעיל, v. בעל a. בעלא.
בעילה f. (בעל) sexual intercourse. Keth. 3a שויוה זנות עילת לבעילתו רבנן the Rabbis (in this case) have declared his coition (by which he wanted to establish marriage), a mere act of prostitution (annulled his mar- riage). Ib. 73a, a. e. זנות בעילת בעילתו עושה אדם אין the presumption is that nobody wants to make his inter- course with a woman one of prostitution (but wants to make her hiswife thereby). -- Ib. 4a מצוה בעילת the marital duty, i e. first coition; frequ. ראשונה ב׳.
