בעיר, בעירא ch. . (b. h. בעיר; בער; cmp. also בעה) grazing animal, cattle. Targ. Gen. I, 24 q.; a. fr. --- Y. B. Mets. II, 8c bot.; Lev. R. s. 27, a. e. דקיקא ב׳ smmall cattle; v. בהמה. - Pesik. B'shall. p. 93a ב׳ לי אתקן get an animal ready for me (for travel). Snh. 105a (in Hebr. dict., play on בעור).
בעית, v. בעת.
בעל (b. h.; בע, v. בעה, to enter into, take posses- sion) [in b. h. to be master, protect;] to have sexual intercourse (both legal or ilicit), to embrace a woman. Kidd. 9b וכ׳ מלמד ובעלה 'and he embraced her' (Deut. XXIV, 1), this intimates that woman can be acquired as wife by intercourse, v. ביאה. -- בועלל loover, adulterer, con- trad. to בעל husband. Sot. V, 1, a. fr. לבעל שאסורה כשם לבועל . . . . as well as the woman suspected of adultery is forbidden to her husband (who must separate himself from her), so is she forbidden to the lover (who cannot marry her after leaving her husband). Yeb. 103a לשבע וכ׳ ב׳ בעילות that wicked man had seven sexual connect- ions &c.; a. fr. --Part. pass. f. בעולה one no longer a virgin, opp. to בתולה; married woman, opp. to ארוסה, v. ארס. Keth. 10b; a. fr. - Pl. בעולות. Y. Kidd. I, 58b bot.; a. fr. Nif. נבעלה she had intercourse. Keth. 5a . . . נישאת וכ׳ ונבעלת is married on the fourth day and embraced in the night of the fifth day of the week. בעל m. (b. h.; preced.) 1) husband. Kidd. I, 1 and she becomes her own master הב׳ ובמיתת בגט through a. letter of divorce or on the husband's death; a. v. fr. -- 2) the idol Baal. Y. Ab. Zar. III, 43a bot. גוייה ראש ב׳ וכ׳ הוה the Baal was the phallus and had the shape of a bean [readוכאפו. -- 3) [the fructifer,] rain (v. Taan. 6b; cmp.Is. LV, 10). ב׳ בית a feld sufficiently watered by rain and requiring no artificial irrigation. Tosef. M. Kat. I, 1 הב׳ (בית) שדה. B. Bath. III, 1. Tosef. Succ. בעלה f. (preced.) mistress, owner &c. Gen. R. s. 52 (rendering בעלת, Gen. XX, 3, as though בעלת) דבעלה מרתא her husband's mistress. -- Compounds are mostly self- evident, e. g. הגט בעלת the woman receiving the letter of divorce; -איברים־ ב׳ an animal of large build. Ber. 32a; v. בעל.

בער (b. h.; בע, v. בעה; cmp. באר) [to clear,] 1) to burn (act. a. neut.). Ex. R. s. 2 בוערת אש burning fire. Ib. וכ׳ בוער שהסנה כשם as the bush is burning &c. [Num. R. s. 9, end בע״ לבוערים, read לבוסרים, v. בסר I, Var. לכופרים.]-- 2) to be empty. Denom. בער. --3) to eat up. Denom. בעיר. P. ביער 1) to clear, remove (out of existence or out of possession). Pes. 6a לבער זקוק is bound to remove (the leaven by burning or otherwise); a. fr. -- Shebi. VII, 7 לב׳ חייב is bound to remove (dispose of the fruits of the Sabbath year in due time). [Num.
