בצורת f. (b. h. בצרת, בצרה; בצר) scarcity of pro- vision, dearth. Ab. V, 8 וכ׳ ב׳ של רעב a famine in con- sequence of high prices, when some are hungry, others are satisfied, ב׳ ושל מהומה של רעב a famine through political disturbances and through dearth. Gen. R. s. 33 ב׳ שנת a year of dearth. Taan. III, 1 ב׳ מכת, expl. ib. 19b ב׳ לידי המביאה מכה a calamity which will produce dearth (want of rain in season).

בצל (בץ, cmp. פצל) to peel; to split, branch off. Lam. R. introd.; Koh. R. to XII, 7 (interpret. הדרך אם Ezek. XXI, 26) דבצלית אמה (אם) an arm which branches off (direction post on the cross-road). Ithpe. איבציל (denom. of בצלא) to grow bulbous. Erub. 29b top זירתא אי׳ (ed. Pesaro a. Ar. אפציל, Var. אבציל) the bulb has grown to the length of a span.

בצע (b. h.; בץ; cmp. בזע, בקע, פצע) 1) to cut, break, esp. to break bread and say the blessing. Hull. 7b מימיו וכ׳ על ב׳ לא never said grace over a piece of bread which was not his own (never accepted an invitation). Ber. 46a וכ׳ בוצע בע״הב the host breaks the bread and the guest says grace after meal. Ib. 47a וכ׳ לבצוע רשאי הבוצע אין he who is chosen to break the bread, must not begin to break until the Amen of those that respond (to the bless- ing) is finished; a. fr. -- 2) to split the diference, to ad- jast, compromise. Snh. 6b top לבצוע . . . . . נגמר after the legal proceedings are closed, thou must not act as an arbiter in a compromise. Ib. לב׳ אסור the court is for- bidden to attempt a settlement (you must let the law take its course). Ib. לב׳ מצוה it is a meritorious act to bring about a settlement. Ib.
