בקרות f. (בקר) cattle-yard, cattle-farm, stock of cattle. M. Kat. 12a; Tosef.ib. II, 11 ביקורת (Var. בקירות, בקרות); Y. Pes. IV, 31b top בקורת. Y. Yeb. IV, 6a bot.; Y. Nidd. I, 49b top; Gen. R. s. 20 [read:] אנטונינוס בית של בקרות רבי בית של בקרות ממנה (שוורים) והרביעו עוברת היתה the herd of the estate of A. passed by and (some oxen) thereof covered the herd of Rabbi's estate; [perhaps the second בקרות is to be read בקרות fem. pl. of בקרה; v. Var. lect. in l. c.]
בקרותא I ch. same. Lam. R. to , 9 וחד בענא חד בב׳ one is employed in the fold and one in the cattle-farm. Y. Snh. VII, 25d bot. וכ׳ בקוותא מן עגל גנב (corr. מן.. ליה ואייתיה בקר׳) he stole a calf from the yard and brought it to him.
בקרותא II, בקרנותא f. (v. בקרא II) levity, thought- lessness. Targ. Jer. XXIII, 32. Targ. I Sam. XVII, 28.
בקרת, v. בקרא.
בקש (b. h.; בק, v. בקא; corresp. to ch. בעי); Pi. ביקש, בקש to seek, desire, beg, ask. Kidd. 65a וכ׳ מבקשין the court begs him to give her a letter of divorce, opp. to כופין. Ber. 12b וכ׳ לקבוע בקשו they (the Rabbis) intended to insert the chapter about Balak &c. Gen. R. s. 84 ב׳ וכ׳ לישב he intended to live in peace; a. fr. -- רחמים ב׳ to pray (for mercy), v. בעי. Ber. l. c. B. Bath. 91b; a. fr. Hithpa. התבקש, Nithpa. נתבקש to be sought, to be hunted for (by detectives); to be summmoned. Taan. 29a (a disguised warning given to R. Gamliel) החוטם בעל מתבקש the well-known man is wanted; v. חוטם. B. Mets. 86a, v. ישיבה.
בקשה f. (b. h.; preced.) desire, prayer. Ned. XI, 12 ב׳ דרך in the way of a request (to give a divorce, v. preced.). Ber. 9a, a. fr. ב׳ לשון אלא נא אין the word נא in the Bible means prayer (I pray &c.). Ib. 57a תויה,, בקשתו his prayer is held in suspense (its fulfillment is doubtful). - ממך בב׳ pray thee, v. בע. Ib. 9a. Gen. R. s. 75 end; a. fr. -- Pl. בקשות.
בקתא, ביקתא f. (=בקעתא, v. באגא a. בקעה) valley short cut; group of felds. Ber. 34b bot. I consider him arrogant בב׳ דמצלי מאן (Ms. M. a. Ar. בפקתא q. v.) who prays in a valley (where people pass by). Keth. 54a; 103a בביקתי ולא בביתי 'in my house' (as long as you will spend your widowhood in my house'-- tthe marriage con- tract reads) but not in my estate, i. e. she must be content to live in her late husband's house with his heirs, but she cannot claim a separate residence. [Com- ment. עקתי=בקתי בי house of my distress, narrow house, i. e. when there is no room for her and the heirs, she loses her claims, v. Sabb. 77b, etymol. of עקתא=ב׳ בי narrow place.-בי׳־ בר (בת) one of the same rural com- munity; trnsf. of the same class or category; neighbor. Men. 24b ב׳ בני כולהו they all belong together. Meiil. 17b ב׳ חדא בני of the same category. -- eb. 84a בי׳ בת (ed. בוקתא) a parallel case stated immediately after.

בר I m. (b. h.; ברר) [empty, open] 1) uncultivated ground, forest, prairie; opp. יישוב. Kil. VIII, 6. Hull. 80a הבר שור the ox of the prairie, bufalo. Ib. הב׳ איל forest ram. Y. Sabb. XIV, 14b bot. ב׳ של חזיר wild swine. -- 2) clear, visible, whence the outside, surface, opp. תוך. Yoma 72b a scholar כברו תוכו שאין whose inside is not as his outside (who is insincere); Ber. 28a. Y. Pes. VII, 34a bot. בר תוך the inner parts of the Passover lamb must hang outside (not be put inside, v. R. Akiba in Mish. VII, 1); Mekh. Bo, 6 ובר תוך (read בר תוכו); Pes. 74a R. Ish. called it בר תוך Ar. s. v. תך 2 (ed. תוך תוך, Var. in Rashi a. Ar. תיכברא q. v.).
בר, בר, ברא ch. same 1) (=h. שדה, יער) forest, prairie &c. Targ. Ps. L, 10sq. Targ O. Gen. III, ;; a. e. -- 2) (adj..) living in the forest &c., wild. Targ. Ps. l. c. Var. ברא תרנגול; Sabb. 78a ב׳ תרנגולא Ms. M. (ed. לת. . ..) wood- cock (hen of the prairie). - *3) peel. Ib. 139b דתומא ב׳ the peel of garlic; [Rashi, expl. צלע, must have read אבראl. -- 441) (=h. חון) outside, outdoors, street. Targ. Gen. XXXIV, 31 ב׳ נפקת a prostitute, v. חון II; a. fr. -- Y. Kil. IX, 32b לבר לך בעי מאן who wants thee outside? (an intimation to leave the room). Snh. 62ab; Sabb. 106a, a. e. לברא תני פוק go out and teach it in the street (i. e. your tradition is rejected). - ברא תנא a Tannai not recorded in the Mishnah, v. ברייתא. M. Kat. 17b (Rashi; תנא האי דברייתא); B. Bath. 93b Ar. (ed. בתרא); cmp. בראה. -- 4) (prep. a. adv.) outside; מן בר outside of, except, with- out. Targ. O. Gen. XIV, 24; a. fr. -- Ber. 38b דין מן ב׳ וכ׳ וב׳ without this and without that, i. e. apart from these two arguments. Y. Erub. VII, end 24d מדעתיה ב׳, without his knowledge; a. fr. -- Hull. 62b מיניה בר וסימניך and thy mnemonical sign (as to צרדא a. ברדא, the one being forbidden, the other permitted) be; keep aloof from it (כרדא). -- Trnsf. restriction (everywhere except . .), proviso. Succ. 45b; Snh. 97b who enter the heavenly courts בב׳ with certain qualifications (by special grant), ב׳ בלא without any restrictions. -- לבר, מלבר apart from, outside, exclusively. Cant.
