גמד (cmp. קמט, קמץ) to contract, shrink, be tight. Pes. 111a מסאניה גמוד (Ms. M. גמד) his shoes shrank (be- came too tight). Hull. 43a ליה גמדא (the gullet) contracts. Gitt. 57a גמדא the land shrinks, opp. רווחא. Yoma 69a; Bets. 15a וכ׳ דנרש גמדא נמטא האי the shrunk (hard) mattress of Narash (which does not warm) is permitted (does not come under the law of כלאים). -- Part. pass. גמיד contracted, atrophied. Targ. Jud. III, 15; XX, 16 (h. text אטר q. v.).

גמול m. (b. h.; גמל) deed, reward, recompense. Keth. 8b גמולכם . . . הג׳ בעל may He who rewards, pay you for your good deed. -- Pl. גמולים, גמולין. Gen. R. s. 13 ג׳ וכ׳ טובים goodness bestowed on the guilty. Tosef. Shebi. VII, 9 ג׳ מהן משלמין ואין and favors received must not. be repaid with them (the fruits of the Sabbath year); ib. Peah IV, 16. -- גמולות. Deut. R. s. 1 פורע אני ג׳ (some ed. גמי׳ incorr.) I repay according to deeds.

*גמומסית, גומסית f. (גמס, to couple; cmp. גמז) coupling song, a sarcastic adaptation of ׳~po~, to deride the hymenean songs in their licentious application to sodomy and to copulation of animals (cmp. איפותורום). - Pl. גמומסיות, גומסיות (Ar. ed. Koh. גמססיות). Gen. R. s. 26 the generation of the flood were not doomed to destruction ולבהמה לזכר ג׳ שכתבו עד until they composed hymenean songs for sodomy &c.; Tanh., ed. Bub., B'resh. 22 גמיקיסום; 33 קמיסמסין, Var. קמיסקסין, Y'lamd. quot. in Ar. גמיסיקין-- (perversions arisen from confounding our w. with גמיקין q. v.); Yalk. Gen. 43 גממטיות (corr. acc.).; Lev. גמז (cmp. גמומסית), Pi. גמז to couple, esp. to suspend branches of the wild fg on the cultivated (the process called caprification, v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Caprificatio). Tosef. Shebi. I, 11 ומגמזין ומצדדין ed. (missing in ed. Zuck.).

גמזית f, m. גמזיות (גמז) 1) branches used for caprification. Pes. IV, 8 (55b) הקדש של ג׳ ומתירין (ed. Y. בג׳, Var. מתזירין) they considered as permitted the use of branches of (carob or sycamore) trees belonging to the Temple treasury; Tosef. ib. III, 19 (Var. גזוזיות, גיזות); Men. 71a וכ׳ חרוב של . . . . ג׳; Pes. 56a; Y. ib. IV, 31b; Y. Peah VII, end, 20. [R. Hai Gaon reads גואזיות twigs, cmp. גזוזיות Var. גמי I, גמע, Pa. גמי, גמע ch.=h. גמא, גמע, to swallow, quaf. Targ. Job XXXIX, 30 גמען (Ms. גמעאן). - Y. Ab. Zar. II, 41c bot. (expl. שורפה, Mish. II, 7) לה נמי (ed. גמילה, corr. acc.) he quafts it, sucks it out. Succ. 49b גמועי ליגמע let him quaff (take full draught~; ib. אגמע גמועי (read; מגמע with Rashi, or גמע, v. Rabb. D.
