CXIX, 20) gar'sah &c.; it says גרסה and not טתנה (my soul heaps up, but not it grinds, learns but not analyzes); (ed. ליגריס, and other Variants); Yalk. Ps. 876. -- Ber. 8a ביתאי בגו גריסנא הוה Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.) I used to study in my house; Meg. 29a. Ber. l. c. bot. turned his face וגריס and reviewed (what he had learned). Taan. 10b למיגרס to recite traditions, opp. לעיוני to spectu- late. Ber. 13b (ref. to Deut. XI, 18, v. Targ. Y. a. l.) teach your children . . ., בהו דליגרסו היכי כי (Ms. M. בהו ונגרסו) so that they be able to review them (by themselves); a. fr. -- Part. act. גריס well-versed, knowing by heart. B. גרסא, גירסא I f. (preced.) 1) acquired learning, studdy of tradition. Targ. Cant. I, 2 בג׳ for verbal study. -- Meg. 6b וכ׳ ג׳ לאוקומי to preserve (in memory) what one has learned requires divine assistance. Sabb. 21b דינקותא ג׳ what has been learned in youth (which is better re- membered). Ib. 30b מג׳ פומיה פסיק הוה לא did not cease reciting. Erub. 68a בגרסאי . . . . אנא I am busy studying; a. fr. -- Pl. גרסייא, ניר׳. B. Bath. 22a מגירסייהו ליטרדו דלא Ms. M. גרסי m. (v. גריס) grits-dealer or maker, v. גרוסה. Midr. Prov. ch. IX; Erub. 21b הג׳ יהושוע (not רבי, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note).
גרע I (b. h.; v. גרר) to scrape off, to diminish, deduct. Snh. 29a גורע המוסיף כל he who adds (to the truth) diminishes (whoever does too much does too little). R. Hash. 28b, a. fr. תגרע בל על עובר transgresses the law which prohibits diminishing from what the Loaw prescribes (Deut. XIII, 1, v. בל). Yoma 48a ודורשין ומוסיפין גורעין we may take away (one servile letter from one word of the ttext) and add it tto another and thus interpret the law (e. g. הפר מדם explained as; מהפר דם); B. Bath. 111b; a. fr. - Y. Yeb. VIII, end, 9d, v. גלע. - [Gen. R. s. 19, a. e. קומתו גרעה, v. גוע.]]- Part. pass. גרוע inferior. Pl. גרועים. Gen. R. s. 28. [Ber. 36a גרע ומי, read with Ms. M. גריעי.] Hif. הגריע to deduct from, to calculate the price of redemption in proportion to the years served and those to be served, v. גירוע Kidd. 11b מפדיונה מגרעת she makes a deduction from her redemption money; ib. 14b מגרעת פדיונה she lessens &c.; ib. 16a פד׳ מגרע (corr. acc.). Y. Kidd. I, 58c bot.; Y. Shebu. VI, beg. 36d ב)מעה) מגרעת וכ׳ she redeems herself by deducting a M'ah for each year. Nif. נגרע to be deducted, to be redeemed by deducting the compensation for the time served. Y. Kidd. l. c. אם ליגרע בקשה if the desires a redemption by deduction &c.; Y. Shebu. l. c. למיגרע (read; להי׳ or לי׳). Kidd. 11b פרוטה עד תיגרע she can redeem herself by deductions until she comes down to a I'rutah.
גרע ch. same, esp. to shave, cut the hair (dialectically interchanging with גרד). Targ. Jud. XVI, 19; II Sam. X, 4 Ar. (ed. גדע, ed. Lag. IISam. l. c. גרע; cmp. Is. XV, 2,. Jer. XI.VIII, 37). -- Lam. R. to I, 1רבתי (מאת׳ חד 8) רישיה ג׳ he shaved his head. Snh. 96a (prov.) לארמאה גרעתיה וכ׳ Ar. (ed. גרירתיה, Ms. M. גרידתיה) if you shave a. gentile, he likes it; hang fire on his beard, and you will get no end of his fun (i. e. if he finds it convenient, he will submit to indignities). -- Part. pass. גריע, f גריכא 1) shaved. Lam. R. l. c. -- 2) inferior, less. Yeb. 51a ג׳ ממאמר is inferior (as to legal power) to &c., v. מאמר. Gitt. 70a דכולהו ג׳ the worst of all. Af. אגרע as preced. Hif. [Targ. Y. II Gen. גרע II (b. h.; cmp. גרגר) to form globules, to drop. Denom. גרעין. P. גרע, Hif. הגריע (denom. of גרעין) to form globules (one of the early stages of development of the grape). Shebi. IV, 10 משיגרעו גפנים grape vines (must not be cut down in the Sabbath year) from the moment they form stones, Maim.; oth. opin. ovules containing moisture; Y. ib. IV, end 35c משיגריעו (Hif.), defined מים משיזחלו, with ref. to Job XXXVI, 27; Ber. 63b; Pes. 52b sq. משיגריעו (Ms. M. 2 משיגרעו).
