דמי, דמה (b. h.; v. דמם, דום) ) to mumble, think (cmp. דבב); to be silent. Denom. (דימה,) דמות. -- 2) to imagine, compare. Denom. דמות. -- 3) (denom. of דמות) to resemble, be like, to imitate. Sabb. 133b לו דומה חוי imitate Him. Ber. 29b וכ׳ עליו דומה שתפלתו to whom his prayer appears like a burden. Taan. 22b יפה דומה דורו אין (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 20) his generation was not con- sidered worthy. B. Kam. 92b; Yalk. Jud. 67 לו לדו׳ אדם ובן (not ובני) and man associates with his equal. SifraSh'mini Par. 10, ch. דמי I, דמא ch. same, 1) to be dumb. Targ. Hab. II, 19 דמיא (some ed. incorr. ר׳). -- 2) to imagine, suspect, consider, Targ. I Kings VIII, 27 דמי (incorr. חמי). --- Part. act. a. pass. דמי suspected, considered; resembling, like. -- Yeb. 114b בדדמי אמרה she speaks of what was to be suspected (under the circumstances, though she has not seen it). -- דמי שפיר it is considered as right, it is right. Ab. Zar. 38b ד׳ ש׳ it is all right (is permitted). Ber. 13b ד׳ ש׳ מיגנא הא but to lie (on the back) is permitted; a. v. fr. -- Ber. 25b ד׳ . . . . ביתא כוליה the entire house is to be considered (for legal purposes) as four cubits. דמים, דמין m. pl.. constr. דמי (דמה) eguivalent. compensation; (cmp. שוה)price, valuue; payment. Pes. 112b do not bargain ד׳ לך שאין בשעה when thou hast no money to pay with. Kerith. 13b וערכין ד׳ the assessment of an object to be redeemed or of an object the value of which was dedicated, v. ערך. -Pes. 32a . . . מידה לפי וכ׳ ד׳ לפו או must he pay the fine according to quantity or according to value? -- Kidd. I, 6 באחר ד׳ הנעשה כל whatever is used as paymment for another object; expl. ib. 28a וכ׳ ד׳ הנישום כל whatever is assessed as an equi- valent, i. e. an exchange is meant and not a sale for cash. דמין, דמי, conmr. דמי ch. same. Targ. Lam. V, 4 (h. text מחיר); a. fr. -- B. Mets. 5b he thinks (as a mental reservation) ליה יהבנא קא דמי Iam willing to commpensate him. Ib. להו משמע ד׳ בלא לאינשי תחמוד לא common people understand the law, 'thou shalt not covef (Ex. XX, 16) to mean coveting to get our neighbor's property without compensation. B. Kam. 46a וכ׳ רדיא דמי אי if he paid the market price of a ploughing ox, he surely bought him for ploughing; a. fr.
