וכ׳ גיסא does the Vav of gahon belong to the first half or to the second?-- Gen. R. s. 58 Ephron (Gen. X XIII, 16) is spelt וא״ו חסר without Vav; a. fr. -- Y. Shebu. I, 33a bot. וכ׳ מוסיף וי״ו שעיר the Vav in Us'ir (Num. XXVIII, 22) adds to the preceding subject, i. e. a goat in addition to &c. Kidd. 66b וכ׳ דשלום וי״ו tha Vav in Shalom (Num. XXV, 12) is curtailed (so that it may be read Shalem, unblemished). Hull. 16a, v. אופתא. B. Mets. 87a; Meg. 16b, v. לברות. -- Yoma 45a, s. fr. דרשי לא וא״ו they do not use the Vav for interpretation; a. fr. -- ll. ווי״ם, ווי״ן. Y. Meg. I, 71c top (deriving from העמודים ויי, Ex. XXVII, 10) וכ׳ ווים שיהא that the shape of the Vav in the Penta- teuch is column-like (as in אשורית כתב); Snh. 22a . . . . מה וכ׳ ווים אף as the columns have not changed (their shape), so has not the shape of the Vav. ואלע f. (ואל, cmp. b. h. יעל a. הואיל) propriety. ו׳ לא it is unbecoming. Ned. 8b וכ׳ למישרא ו׳ לא Ar. (ed. שרי, Var. יאי; Nahm. יאלי) it is unbecoming (for a pupil) to absolve from a vow in a place where his teacher lives. Contr. ולא.

ודאי, ווךי m. ודאית, ודייה (ידאה) f. (ידע) 1) well-known, certain; distinct, real. Ber. 33b הו׳ (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) Thou, the known one! -- Arakh. I, 1 ו׳ זכר a person distinctly male, ודאית נקבה distinctly female (no hermaphrodite &c.). Yoma VIII, 8, a. fr. ו׳ אשם, v. אשם. -- Sabb. II, 7 הו׳ that which undoubtedly requires the separation of the tithes, opp. דמאי. -- Y. Bets. I, 60b וודייו, וודייה where there is no doubt about it, opp. ספיקו, ספיקה. Kidd. IV, 54c top יודייה לך (read; וו׳ לכה) the l'khah (Ps. L XXX, 3) has the emphatic form (unto thee as well as unto us). --- 3) (noun) certainty, undisputed fact. -- מוציא ספק אין ו׳ מידי doubt cannot take a case out of the status of certainty. Ab. Zar. 41b וכ׳ ואין וו׳ ספק הוי here is a. doubt (the idolatrous character of an object may have been given up) against a certainty (that it was an idol) and the doubt cannot set aside the certainty. Pes. 9a; a. fr. -- בו׳, ו׳ (adv.) surely, indeed; in reality. Y. Keth. V, 29d. Gen. R. s. 98 בו׳ עלית 'thou didst ascend' thy father's couch (Gen. XLIX, 4) means in reality (no metaphor). Ib. ו׳ חללת 'thou didst defile (ib.) is to be taken literally. Pes. l. c. מעשרי דו׳ for it is sure that they separate the tithes. Gen. וה, ווה (הוה) (interj.; cmp. b. h. הה, האח) vah (havah), an exclamation of pleasure; ah! &c., contradist. to ווי (woe!). Lam. R. to I, 5 אמרי וה אמר ווי אמרת למה (Ar. ואי) why didst thou exclaim, Vay (woe!)? Said he, I said Vah. Ib. וכ׳ ליה וי בין between Vay and Vah R. Joh. escaped. -- Pesik. Asser, p. 97b וה אומרים הם בתחלה וי אומרים הם ולבסוף at first (on entering the hot and again the cold place) they say Vah (how pleasant!), but finally they say Vay (woe); Tanh. R'eh 13 הוה; Tanh. ed.
