Pi. זכה, זיכ׳ 1) to acquit, to argue or vote for acguittal. Erub. 19a וכ׳ זכית יפה thou wast right in acquitting, in condemning. Snh. III, 5 מזכין שנים if two vote for ac- quittal; a. fr. -- 2) to obtain a privilege for, take posses- sion in behalf of; to transfer, make an assignment to. Y. Kidd. l. c. דעת לבן זי׳ זה the one obtained a privilege for a rational being. B. Bath. VIII, 6 לאחר בה זי׳ if in his will (found on his body) he made an assignment to somebody else (as executor); a. fr. -- 3) to transfer divine favor, to exercise a protecting infuence on. Snh. 111a מזכה וכ׳ כל את protects the entire town. Yoma 87a דיין לא וכ׳ שמזכין אלא לעצמן שזוכין Ms. M. not only do they obtain divine grace ior themselves, but they also ttrans- fer the same on their children &c.; a. fr. -- 4) to lead to righteousness, to convert, make better, purer. Ib.; Ab. V, 18, a. e. וכ׳ את המזכה כל whoever causes a community to do good. Maec. III, 16 וכ׳ לזכות הקב״ה רצה the Lord desired to make Israel pure; a. fr. Hithpa. הזדכה, Nithpa. נזדכה 1) to be acguitted, to be found not guilty. Snh. 30a פלוני נז׳ מדבריהם the de- fendant has been acquitted by their (the court's) verdict. Y. ib. V, 22d uop אותו פוטרין מזדכה ובאיזו and on which- soever (of the two counts) he is found not guilty, he is acquitted; a. ir. -- 2) to have favorable evidence or argt- ment ofered. Ib. 23a עצמו מפי ׳ if the defendant him- self offers &c. Ib. עצמו מפי שנ׳ הרי (read עדו מפי).
זכי, זכא ch. same, 1) to be clear, pure. Targ. Job IX, 15. Ib. X, 15 זכיתי (some ed. זכי׳, corr. acc.); a. e. -- 2) to go unpunished (h. נקה). Targ. Jer. XXV, 29; a. c. -- 3) to deserve well, do gooed, to obtain a claim on divine favor. Lev. R. s. 34 [read:] בי דכי או בי זכי . . . אדם the beggar says . . . . 'obtain a claim &c. through me', or 'become pure tthrough me', (which means) בי גרמך זקי benefit thyself through me. Ib. בך זכיין אנן we shall give thee something. Ib. אתתא בהאי ז׳ give this woman (me) something. Y. Hag. I, 76 bot. וכ׳ מזכי . . שלח sent his son to Tiberias for his improvement (through study); Y. Pes. III, 30b bot. יזכי (corr. acc.); a. fr. --- 41) to become worthy of divine grace, to be privileged to enjoy, to live to see. Targ. Job XX, 17; a. e. - Ber. 17a זכיין במאי נשים where- with do women (who do not study the Law) deserve divine grace? -- Sabb. 21b זכאי אי if I had been worthy (if the Lord had permitted me). Lev. R. s. 25 זכית אי אכלית if the Lord permit, I may eat thereof. Ib. זכית אאם אכול (תיכולל) if thou shalt live long enough to eat thereof. (ed. למלבא) whosoever defeats the king in argument. Ib. 107a למריה ז׳ עבדא (old ed. כפייה) the servant conquered his master. Bekh. gb לי זכיתו אי if you defeat me; בכו זכינא ואי (read לכו) and if we defeat. you. Hull. 31b וכ׳ זכנהו R N. defeated the Rabbis; a. e. - 5) to entitle, give possession to. Pes. 78a תרי לבי מזכי שטרא a document giving a title to both contestants, i. e. one agreeing with two opposite opinions. זכייה f. (זכה) possesion, taking possession, claim. Y. Peah V, beg. 19b, v. הפקר. Y. Pes. II, 29a top דאמר מאן ז׳ according to the opinion that renounced property does not go out of the owners possession until somebody book possession of it. B. Kam. 12b בגויה ז לכהנים להו אית Ms. M. (ed. בגוייהו) the priests have a claim on it. Ib. ולית זכיה להו Ms. M. (omitted in ed.). B. Mets. 12a ליה אית לנפשיה ז׳ has a right to ake possession in his own behalf;

זכירה f. (זכר) 1) remembrance, thinking. Men. 43b (ref. to Num. XV, 39 וכ׳ ז׳ ז׳ לידי מביא ראייה seeing leads to thinking, thinking to doing. Gen. R. s. 33 (ref. to Gen. VIII, 1) לו נזכר ז׳ מה what (meritorious deed) remember- ed He to him. Meg. 15a בזכירתה אביגיל Abig. suggested licentiousness by alluding to her being remembered (I Sam. XXV, 31); a. e. -- 2) recitation. Ib. 2b (ref. to Esth. IX, 28) ז׳ recitation of the Book of Esther, contrad. to עשייה celebration of the f'estival.

זכך (b. h.; v. זבה) to be clear. Plp. זכזך to make clear. Tosef. Nidd. IV, 11 רך שמן ומזכזך oil is softly flowing and clears (the embryonic mass; Nidd. 25b ומצחצחו).
זכר (b. h.; ch. דכר) [to mark,] to remember, mention; to celebrate (by a ceremony &c.). Pes. 106a (ref. to Ex. XX, 8 זכור) היין על זכהו Ms. M. (ed. זוכרהו) remember the Sabbath (distinguish it) by a benediction over wine; Bets. 15b וכ׳ שבא מאחר זכרהו mark the Sabbath (by a. ceremony) from another (Holy Day) which (preceding the Sabbath) may cause the neglect of it (Ms. M. לאחר, Rashi מאהר, v. אהר; v.
