זקר (cmp. Syr. זקר P. Sm. 1151) 1) to thrust, fling. Yoma 67b וכ׳ בת זוקרו Ar. a. Mss. M. 2 a. O. (ed. זורקו, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note), v. בת II. -- 2) to cast lots; to decide. Nif. נזקר, Nithpa. נזדר 1) to be thrown; to eap, to stagger. Ib. 38b, v. בת II. -- 2) to be decided upon, to be decreed upon. Erub. 52b נזקר הוא שרובו למקום (Var. נזד׳) he is judged to belong to where the larger portion of his body is. -- R. Hash. 18a אחת בזקירה נזקרין כולן Ar. (Var. Ar., a. ed. בסקירה . . . נסקרין) the fate of all of them is decided in one decree. --- Ber. 46a וכ׳ יזדקר אאל (Alf. a. oth. יזדקק, v. דקק, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 440) may there not occur to him (our host) or to us anything that suggests sin &c.
זקר ch. same, Ithpa. אזדקר to leap forth, to leap with joy; to stagger, reel. Gitt. 57a וכ׳ אזדקור they leaped and ate and drank. Nidd. 17b אזדקרה she staggered, jumped backward; ib. 57b. -- Lev. R. s. 5 (ref. to Is. XXII, 17, v. גבר) מזדקר . . . . תרנגולא כהדא Ar. (in ed. a. Yalk. Is. 291 our w. omitted) like a (slaughtered) cock that rolls from place to place in spasmodic thrusts.

זר m. (b. h.; v. זור a. זרר) 1) stranger; (in Talm. mostly) non-priest, layman. Zeb. II, 1. Ib. 14a; Yoma 49a; a. fr. -- Fem. זרה. Yeb. 85b וכ׳ ז׳ ותהא granted that she is not of a priestly family; -is not a lay-woman permitted &c. --- 2) oppressor, enemy. Y. Ned. IX, beg. 41b (ref. to זר אל, Ps. LXXXI, 10) וכ׳ שבקרבך זר do not make the enemy within thyself thy king; Sabb. 105b וכ׳ זד אל איזהו which is the tyrannical power within thee -- Ex. R. s. 34 (play on זר a. זר, v. זיר) if one is worthy זר לו נעשים זר לאו ואם they are to him a crown, if not --an enemy; Tanh. Vayakh. 8. -- Fem. זרה. Yoma 72b ז׳ לו נעשית Ms. O. (Ms. M. ממנו ז׳ נעשית) the Law appears to him a tyyrant (Ms. M. she becomes estranged from him, v. זור). -- 3) out- cast; shunned, loathsome (v. זרא). Num. R. s. 7 (play on זרא, Num. זרב m. (v. next w.) rim, lining, trimming. Kil. IX, 7 ׳ לg מנעל Ms. M. a. oth. (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note; ed. זרד) a cloth-lined shoe; Y. ib. 32d top.
זרב to surround, line, trim. Y. Kil. IX, 32d top (ref. to זרב של מנעול, v. preced.) וכ׳ עימרא דזרבין אתרין אית (not. עימיה) there are places where they put wool around the shoe from inside. lthpe. אזדריב (denom. of preced.) to be made to fow over the rim, to be upset. Yoma 78a דמזדריב משום ed. (Ar. לאזדרבויי דאתי משום, Ms. O. לא׳ אתי דילמא, v. Rabb. D.S. a. l. note 70) because the silver vessel (being smooth) may be upset and liquid flow over. V. זרזיף.
זרבובית f. (v. זרב) a tray or saucer fastened to the bottom of a drinking vessel for the reception of drip- pings; in gen. saucer, dish, disk. Pesik. R. s. 35 שנדמה וכ׳ קטנה כז׳ (ed. Fr. בוכ׳m, corr. acc.) whose face appear- ed (over the camp) like a small disk of fire; Yalk. Dan. 1062 כביבית (corr. acc., or כגיגית). -- Pl. זרבוביות. Lev. R. s. 5; Num. R. s. 10 (e~pl. מזרקי, Am. VI, 6) שיש כוסות ז׳ להם cups with saucers; Yalk. Am. 545 זכוכית בהם שאין (corr. acc.).

*זרגון m. (v. זרג a. denom. P. Sm. 1154) zargon, name of a plant, prob. a species of beet. Y. Kil. I, 27a bot. ולפת ז׳ f. crossed with carrot. [It is evident that our w. cannot mean a vine-shoot, as Fl. to Levy Talm. Dict. I, 564, a. Lcw Pfd. p. 8 suggest. - R. S. to Kil. I, 4 reads וגדין or זגדין.]
*זרגונה m. zargunah, name of a tree or shrub with copious twigs, but bare beneath. Y. Succ. III, beg. 53c.
זרד m. (v. זרז) 1) strength, alertness, valor. Yoma 47a (a metapphor in imitation of Prov. XXXI, 29) הנשים כל לגג עלת׳ אמי וז׳ זרדו ז׳ Ar. (read עלה; ed. זרדו הנשים . . וכ׳ אימא וז׳; Ms. M. אימא זרז זרז, insert וז׳; Ms. M. 2 וז׳ זרדו זריד; v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) all women have done valiantly, but the valor of my mother excelled them all (a metaphor of careful maternity). -- 2) (v. next w.) pl. זרדים, זררין shoots, greens. Tosef. Sabb. IX (X), 16; Sabb. 103a וכ׳ ז׳ המזרד he who cuts greens, if for human food &c. Ib. XVIII, 2 (126b) ז׳ חבילי bundles of greens tyoung reeds &c., available for fodder); ib. 128a; TTosef. ib. זרד (denom. of preced.) זרד ז׳ (=חיל עשה) to do vat- iantly. Yoma 47a, v. preced. Pi. זירד [to strengthen, accelerate growth; cmp. ברא Af..] to trim, nip shoots off. Sabb. XII, 2 והמזרד המקרסם he who cuts off dry twigs, or young shoots. Ib. 103a, v. preced. Ab. Zar. III, 10 (49b). Tosef. Sabb. IX (X), 10 וזרד ed. Zuck. (Var. וזירד).
זרדא m. (זרד) coat of mail, armour (v. P. Sm. 1154, sq. s. vv. זרגא, זרגנא, זרדא). Sabb. 62a, expl. שריון.
