חבש (b. h.) to tie; 1) to saddle, harness. Gen. R. s. 55, end וכ׳ שח׳ חבשה the harnessing which Abraham did. -- 2) to lmprison, chain. Y. Sot. IX, 24b top; Tosef. ib. XV, 7 (Var. lect.) חבשו attempted to force him by im- prisonment, v. חבט. Deut. R. s. 2 וכ׳ חובש היה he could imprison (condemmn) whom he wanted to, opp. פדה. Y. Pes. VIII, 36a bot. ישראל חבשוהו if Israelites keep him ina prison (and promised to let him free for Passover); a. fr. -- Part. pass. חבוש, חבושה. Ber. 5b, a. e. וכ׳ מתיר ח׳ אין a. prisoner cannot release himself from prison (one cannot do as much for himself as he can for others). Ib. 54b. B. III, 28d bot. בשמונה ׳ becomes forbidden by a. neighborhood of eight cubits. Ib. וכ׳ אלא יחבש שלא that it is not made forbidden at a distance of more than eightt cubits. Hif. החביש to be the cause of prohibition as Kilayim. Ib. וכ׳ יחביש שלא that it does not cause a prohibition at a distance of more &c. Hithpa התחבש to be kept as prisoner. Sabb. 152b והן וכ׳ יתחבשו (Ms. M. יחבשו) and they, themselves, shall be kept in prison.

(Var. חביט, ed. וכ׳ בו יש משריק דלא) whatever is closely packed (e. g. wheat) is liable to cause injury to an animal falling upon it. Ithpa. אתחבש to be imprisoned. Lev. R. s. 30 אתח׳ בפילקי he was put in prison; Pesik. [l'kah., p. 182a איחבש Ar. (ed. אתייהב).
חבשה f. (preced. wds.) saddling, harnessing. Gen. R. s. 55, end (ref. to Gen. XXII, 3, a. Num. XXII, 21) ה׳ על ותעמוך ח׳ תבוא let (A braham's) act of harnessin g (anxiety to obey the Lord's behest) come and stand (protect) against (Balaam's) harnessing (anxiety to curse); Mekh. B'shall. s. 1 חובשה.

Bahod. p. 153a חג לו ויש יומו בן וחגו a New Moon of a month in which there is a. festival and whose festival coincides with the New---Moon, v. כסה I. Y. Taan. IV, 69b bot., v. דרומאה. Sot. 36b חגם יום their (the Egyptians) festive day; a. fr. -- Esp. hag (festire period), the Peastt of Booths with its Eighth Day of Con- vocation (עצרת שמיני). Succ.
