חומר II (הומר Ar.) m. (חמר I; v. P. Sm. 1310 s. v. חומרא) [whatever oins or is joinedt] bead, little ball (bulla) hung around the neck; jewel, clasp, seal; trnsf. ח׳ כמין like a jewel, i. e. a precious ethical principle (cmp. Prov. I, 9, a. מרגליתא),a symbol. Kidd. 22b דורש היה ח׳ כמין . . . interpreted this in a symbolical way (giving the practical Biblical law about perforating the slave's ear an ethical signification); Mekh. Mishp , N'zik., s. 2 חומר כמו (Var. אומר, corr. acc.). Sot. 15a ח׳ כמין אדרשנה I shall inter- pret it symbolically. -- Pl. חמורות (fr. חמור, cmp. חמורתא). Hull. 134b ח׳ דורשי (Ar. הומרות) symbolizing interpreters.

חומרא II m. (v. חומר II) joint, knot, bead, amulet. Kidd. 73b וכ׳ ח׳ תלי Ar. (ed. חומרי רמי) if the child is found with an amulet (beads, by which the mother in- timated the hope of future identification) . . . it is not considered a foundling (v. אסופי). -- Pl. חומרי. Ib. 9a top פתכייתא ח׳ glassbeads. Sabb. 147b bot. שדרא ח׳ the verte- brae (v. חוליא I). Gitt. 69atop ח׳ דשב עקרבא a scorpion with seven joints (Rashi; seven shades of color, stripes); v. חומרתא.
חומרא III m. (v. preced.) accumulated sum, result ofcalculation. Ab. Zar. 9aלחומריה ליה ומשכח (Ar. אחמריה, אהמריה) and he will find the sum he wants.
חומרא m. (חמר) weight for holding the tent, socket. Targ. Y. Ex. XXXVIII, 27 (h. text אדן). -- Pl. חומרין, חומרייא, constr. חומרי. Ib.; a. fr.
חומרתא f. (v. preced. wds.) 1) a ball (bulla), bead, charm. Sabb. 57b (expl. טוטפת) דקטיפתא ח׳ a charm containing balsam. Ib. 62a (expl. כוכלת); Gitt. 69b ח׳ דפילון a charm containing phyllon. M. Kat. 12b; Erub. 69ar דמדושא ח׳ (Ms. O. מר׳) a bulla containing a jewel for sealing (differ. opin. v. Rashi to Erub. l. c.). - 2) bud, (ball). חומש m. (b. h. חמש; חמש) 1) one fifth, esp. one fifth of the value to be added as fine on restoring misappro- priated property or redeeming dedicated property (Lev. V, 16; 24; XXVII, 27). B. Kam. Mets. 54a חומשו קרן של the fifth part of the principal (assessed value), i. e. one plus one fifth, v. next w.; a. fr. -- 2) Homesh, one of the five books of Aoses, also one of the fve books of Psalms. Sot. 36b הפיקודים ח׳ the Book of Numbers; שני ח׳ the Book of Exodus; a. fr. -- Pl. חומשים, חומשין. B. Mets.
