ליה אכיל קא בחורשיה that man eats into his windpipe (asks a dangerous question; Rashi; eats in his forest, i. e. knows not what is going on in the world; R. Hai G. in Ar.; he scratches his eye-sore). -- Pl. חורשיא, חורשי. Targ. Jer. IV, 29. -- Gen. R. s. 24, beg. (ref. to Is. XXIX, 17, cmp. Targ. a. l.) אינש דבני ח׳ thickets of people (crowded population).

חוש I m. (השש, cmp. גוש) thick substance. - Pl. חושים. B. Bath. 143b (play on חושים, Gen. XLVI, 23) כח׳ מרובים קנה של numerous as the leaves [or the knots] of reeds. -- V. חישה.
חוש II (b. h.; v. preced.) [to feel, press,] 1) to feel pain, be aected. Erub. 54a בראשו חש if one has a head- ache; בגרונו ח׳ one whose throat is affected; a. fr. -- 2) to apprehend, consider. Y. Peah V, 18d bot. וכ׳ לומר וחש but then he reconsidered saying &c. - Ex. R. s. 3 תחוש אל do not mind it. -- 3) to be anxious, quick, to hurry. Y. Yeb. VIII, 9c top (play on בערא .. חושים, I Chr. חוש ch., pret. חש, part. חש, חייש, same, 1) to feel, suffer, be troubled. Targ. Ps. LXXIII, 21. Targ. Prov. XXVI, 10; a. e. -- Sabb. 140a דלבא ביוקרא חש suffered with heaviness of the heart. -- Ib. וכ׳ בנפשאי וחשאי Ar. (ed. וחשי, Ms. P. בי וחשי, fr. השא, חשי) and I felt the cooling effect from the hair &c. -- 2) to apprehend, care for. Targ. Y. Num. XII, 3; a. e. - Y. Ber. חושבנא m. =h. השבון, calculation, number, measure- ment. Targ. Ex. XXX, 12. Targ. Koh. IX, 10 (Ms. חשבונא); a. e. -- Yoma 17b הוא בעלמא ח׳ it is merely an account of measurements (without observing a particular order). Hull. 95b ידע בעלמא ח׳ השתא now I see only that he understands astronomical calculations. Y. Ber. II, 5a top וכ׳ דהדין חושבניה the numerical value of the letters of the one (צמח) is the same as of those of the other (מנחם). Lev. R. s. 30 ח׳ נחיל הכא מן from now let us commence a new account; Koh. חושלא m. (חשל; v. P. Sm. 1404) 1) pounded grain. Targ. Ez. XXVII, 17 quot. in Rashi (ed. ריחוש). -- 2) peeled barley. Yoma 79a without the husk לה קרי ח׳ Ms. M. a. Ar. (ed. אושלא) it is called hushla (not שעורה). Snh. 27a bot. Hull. 51a. - Pl. חושלי. B. Kam. 30b bot. ח׳ אפקר ed. (Ms. M. אושלי, Ms. H. חשילי) declared as free property peeled barley (which one had spread on public ground for drying). M. Kat. 16b חושלאי מניפה קא (omitted in Ms., v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.) was winnowing peeled barley.
חושן, חשן m. (b. h.; חשן, cmp. חשל) breast-plate. Zeb. 88b וכ׳ מכפר ח׳ the Highpriest's breast-plate brings atonement for wrong judgments. Sabb. 139a לח׳ זכה וכ׳ המשפט was privileged to wear the breast-plate of judgment upon his heart. Yoma 72a וכ׳ מעל ח׳ המזיח he who loosens the breast-plate from the Ephod; a. fr.

חותל c. (חתל b. h. to tie around, swaddle) wrapper of reed-mmatting in which dates are packed, bale. Tosef. Kel. B. Mets. VI, 4 וכ׳ של ח׳ a mat for dates which is intended to be thrown away when the dates are eaten. Kel. XVI, 5 וכ׳ שהוא ח׳ a bale which you can add to or take from (without cutting it open) &c. Y. Sabb. חותם m. (b. h.; חתם) 1) seal, stamp, die; enclosure locked up with a mark. Sabb.VIII, 5 המרצופין כח׳ as much sealing clay as required for a seal on bags. Ib. האיגרות ח׳ seal on letters. Snh. IV, 5 אחד בח׳ . . . טובע אדם a human being prints many coins from one die &c., but the Lord וכ׳ של בחותמו . .. . טבע stamped every human being with the die of Adam, and yet not one is like the other; Y. ib. IV, 22b bot. וכ׳ מח׳. Sabb. 58a שבצוארו בח׳ העבד the slave with the mark hanging down from his neck, בח׳
