חזי, חזה (b. h.) [to divide,] to discern, see (cmp. בון). B. Bath. 91a וכ׳ נעמי חזיתם have you seen what has become of Naomi &c. ? Pi. חזה to distribute kindled chips between logs of wood. Sabb. I, 11 (19b) ומחזין Mss. (ed. Ven. מחיזין; Y. ed. Krot. ומחזיזן, read ומחזיזין, Hif. of חז, or מחזזין), v. אהז. -V. חזית.
חזי, חזא ch. same, to see, rccognize, to decide. Targ. O. Gen. XXIX, 10; a. fr. - Ber. 45a; Erub. 14b, a. e. פוק וכ׳ חזי, v. דבר. Ib. 13b וכ׳ לרמ דחזיתיה (not דחזיתא) because I have seen R. M. &c. Hull. 59b וכ׳ דאיחזי בעינא I want to see your God Erub. 63a לנפשיה ח׳ may ex- amine the knife for his own use; a. fr. -- Part. pass. חזי, חזי, f. חזיא (cmp. ראוי) pointed out, fit for, prcpared;. Targ. O. Gen. XLII, 1. -- 3) to become fit, adapted for use. Bets. 26b אי א׳ בהש דאחו if on the entrance of the Sabbath they became fit for use, they have become so (for the entire Sabbath). Ib. אהזו . . . . והדר אחזו they had been fit (on the entrance of the Sabbath), and were unfiitted (through rain), and became fit again; a. fr. -- 4) to be shown, to be laid before the scholar for decision. חזיון I m. (b. h.) preced. wds.) vision. - Pl. חזיונות (fem.). Snh. 39b (play on והזנות, I Kings XXII, 38) כדי ח׳ שתי למרק Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.) in order to polish (make clear) two visions. Ib. (play on לתמו, ib. 34) ח׳ שתי לתמם כדי to fulfill two visions. Gen. R. s. 13; Yalk. ib. 20 (ref. to חזי, q. v.) וכ׳ ברקיע ח׳ שעושה He creates (awe-inspiring) sights in the sky and causes holy inspiration to rest &c. [Ar. s. v. אד; חזיזיות, fr. חזיזית, breaks, splits.]
חזיון II m. or חזיונה (v. חזזית) 1) lichen, moss. B. Mets. 105b ramifcation (סוכה) is considered weak, שנחבאת בהזיונה (or בחזיונה) when it is hidden under (fully covered with) moss. [Ar. ed. בחיזונה, ed. Koh. בחזיונה; comment. the grip of the hand, fr. אחז; marg. emend.; באחזיונה, v. Tosaf. a. l.)-- Erub. 28a בחזניות ולא בחזין לא אבל Ms. M. (Rabb. D. S. a. l. note quotes חזיונות) but neither with lichens nor with lichen dishes (Lecanora esculenta). -- 2) pl. חזדונות lichen, scab; trnsf. irregular luumps of clouds. Y. Taan. III, 66c bot. a cloud is called haziz (v. next w.) וכ׳ ח׳ ח׳ . . עושה שהוא for He makes the sky full of irregular lumps (cumuli), as we read (Zech. X, 1), the Lord makes hazizim.
חזיז, חזיז m. (b. h.; v. חזזית) 1) cloud with uneven surface (like scabs or swollen lumps), cumulus (which brings rain). Gen. R. s. 13 (allegorical explanation), v. חזיון I. Y. Taan. III, 66c bot., v. preced. -- Bab. ib. 9b. -. Pl. חזיזים. Ib. ח׳ מאי what are hazizim (Zech. X, 1)? Answ. פורחות eruptions (defined; 'a thin under a thick cloud'). -- 2) [Readings vary between חזי a. חזין, pl. of ח] lichen, used as food (Lecantora esculenta). Erub. 28a, v. חזיון II. -- B. Kam. 119b וכ׳ וח׳ כשות the law of rob- bery does not apply to cuscuta and lichen. Keth. 60b. --. 3) [Readings vary as ab.] young blades of grain used for pasture. Taan. 5a התלמים מן ח׳ אוכל Ms. M. חזינא, חזיינא m. ch. (חזי, cmp. חזיז, חזיזא &c.) prickly bur, chestnut. Kel. XIV, 2 a cane with a metal knob ח׳ כמין (ed. Dehr. חזינה) of the shape of a chestnut bur (as a weapon).
חזיר m. (b. h.) swine. Hull. IX, 2 ישוב של ח׳ do- mesticated swine; הבר ח׳ wild boar. Num. R. s. 12 מה וכ׳ להח׳ . . . . איסור is the swine more strictly forbidden than other unclean animals?-- Lev. R. s. 13 פרס זו הח׳ ואת 56a
