חייס I (חוס 2) connection, relationship, legally rec- ognized ancestry or descent. Kidd. 69a ח׳ לו אין עבד a slave has no legal relations (paternity); Yeb. 23a. B. Kam. 88a בנים ח׳ להם שאין who have no legitimate sons (i. e. slaves); אבות ח׳ להם שאין who have no legitimate parentage. חייץ m. (b. h. חיץ; v. חוץ I h. a. ch.) a pile of loose and uneven material, a rough extemporised embankment, opp. to earth-covered and finished. Shebi. III, 8 עושה ח׳ הוא (Y. ed. עושהו) he may make (it) a loose embank- ment; Y. ib. 34d ליה חיין ח׳ מהו what is hayitsh He partitions i up (ref. to Ez. XIII, 10, v. Targ. a. Rashi a.l.).

חייתא II, חיתא f. ch.=h. חיה II, 1) lying-in woman. Targ. Y. Deut. XXVIII, 12 (cmp. Taan. 2a, sq.). Koh. R. to III, 2 וכ׳ ח׳ לה . . ולמה and why do they cell ber ha'thaf Because she was dying and is recovering. -- 3) midwife. Targ. Gen. XXXV, 17. -- Y. Keth. V, 30a, v. חכם. Gen. חייתא, חיתא IV m. (חות, cmp. נחת a. Syr. חתא pera a. trabs, P. Sm. 1408) pouch, bag. Gitt. 45b דתפילי ח׳ a bag containing T'fillin. Hull. 45a (by play on חייתא life a. bag) וכ׳ ביה דמתנח ח׳ וסימניר and thy sign (to remember which of the two skins is essential for life), the bag in which the cerebrum lies. Keth. 93a; B. חיך m. (b. h. חך; חנך) palate; taste. Gen. R. s. 99 (play on חכלילי, Gen. XLIX, 12) לי ערב חיכי the taste in my mouth is sweet to me (Matt. K. חיכו its taste); יs לי חיך sweet taste is mine, is mine; Yalk. ib. 160; Keth. 111b וכ׳ שטועמו ח׳ כל every palate which tastes it, says, (Give) me; Tanh. Vayhi 10 וכ׳ מיינה לי לי ח׳ (give) me a taste of the wine of the Law. -- Trnsf. (cmp. טעם) good sense, persuasive word. Cant. R. to V, 16 (ref. to חכו, ib.) מזה (מתוק) גדול ח׳ לך יש is there anything more persuasive than this?
