חלט ch. same, 1) to make a paste. Targ. II Sam. XIII, 6. -- 2) (cmp. next wds. a. צמת) to cause contraction by scalding or by putting in vinegar. PPart. pass. חליט. Hull. 111a מעיקרא הוי ח׳ Rashi (ed. וכ׳ ליה ח׳ הוה מיחלט) it (the liver) was first scalded (so as to emit no blood in boiling). Pa. חליט to cause contraction, to scald, puat in vinegar. Ib. וכ׳ ליה הלטי. Pes. 74b bot. וכ׳ ביה דח׳ חלא vinegar which one has used once for drawing the blood from meat and contracting the blood vessels, must not be used a second time. thpa. אתחלט, thpe. איתחלט, איחלט 1) to be mixed up, to mingle. חלט II (b. h.; cmp. הלץ) [to surround, tie up (cor- resp. to b. h. צמת),] 1) to make final. Part. pass. חלוט, f. זלוטה permanently soll, irredeamable. Arakh. IX, 4 וכו׳ ה׳ היה .. . הגיע (Talm. ed. 31a ח׳ היתה, read; חלוטה) when the last day . . . . had passed and it (the house) was not redeemed, it was his forever . . . , for we read לצמיתות (Lev. XXV, 30); (Tosef. ib. V, 10 צמת). Arakh. l. e. לו ח׳ שיהא . . . בראשונה formerly the purchaser used to hide himself on the last day . . . . in order that it might become his irredeemably; Sifra B'har ch. V, Par. 4 שתהא לו חלוטה. חלט ch. same, 1) Part. pass. חליט, חליטא irredeem- ably sold. Targ. Y. Gen. XLVII, 20. -- 2) to sentence a leper. Targ. Y. Deut. XXI, 5 למחלוט, v. Af. Pa. חליט to sell irredeemably, to forfeit. Y. Pes. IV, 31b bot. בניהון יחלטון ולא that they might not forfeit their pledged children. Y. Shebi. VI, 36c bot. [readn] דלא בגין בידן .. תחלטון that you might not surrender the govern- ment to their (the Samaritans) hands. Y. Keth. IX, 33b bot. וכ׳ מחלטין אנן we shall declare their property for- feited. חלי, חלה (b. h.; cmp. חלל) 1) to be lax, to be sick, faint away, grieve. Ex. R. s. 43 (expl. ויחל, Ex. XXXII, 11 משה ח׳ Moses was sick (grieved). Kidd. 71b, a. e. מדי חולה Media is sick, v. גוסס. -- Ber. 28b וכ׳ כשח׳ when R. .. . fell sick; a. fr. -- V. חולה. -- 2) to be smooth (to the taste), sweet. Pi. חלה 1) to soften, sweeten; to soothe, assuage (by prayer, gifts &c.). Ex. R. l. c. וכ׳ שהכניס ויתל מהו what does vayhal (Ex. l. c.) mean? He ofered &c. (ref. to Ps. XLV, 13). Ib. וכ׳ המר את עשה ויחל מהו he made sweet what was bitter. Ib. וכ׳ מרירתן חלי sweeten thou the bitterness (sin) of Israel &c. -- Ib. וכ׳ שיחלה מי one to sweeten the bitterne-s &c. (by prayer). Yalk. Ex. 3982 בתפילתו להקבה שחילהו עד אמר אביי (v. infra) Ab. ex- plained vayhal, until he assuaged (the anger of) the Lord &c. Deut. R. s. 3 אותן חלה מרים בניך הרי thy children are bitter, sweeten them. S. a. l. note 3). -- 3) (v. חלל a. חלחל) to per- meate, affect. B. Mets. 107b bile is called mahlah (v. מהלה) וכ׳ מחלה שהיא (Ms. F. שמחללת) for it goes through the entire body [perh. מחלה, fr. חלל].
