חם I (b. h.) pr. n. m. Ham, the son of Noah. Snh. 69b וכ׳ גדול ח׳ H. was the elder of Japheth by one year &c. Ib. 108b בעורו לקה ח׳ H. was punished on his skin (was made black); Gen. R. s. 36 מפוהם ח׳ יצא H. came out (of the ark) blackened; a. e.
חם II m. (b. h.; חמם) warm, hot, boiling. Pes. 75b, sq.; a. fr. -- Nidd. 43a חם בשרו his membrum excited. -- Pl. חמים, המין (sub. מים) hot water. Sabb. 134b שהוחמו ח׳ וכ׳ hot water which was made hot on the Sabbath; a. fr. -- טבריה חמי the hot springs of Tiberias, in gen. natural hot water, opp. o האור חמי water heated by fire. Hull. 8b (Neg. חם III (b. h.; v. Ges. H. Dict. b s. v.) fatherinlaw, husband's father, wife's father. Yeb. XV, 7 המי my hus- band's father. Ib. I, 1 המיו his (the yabam's) father-in- law. Pes. 87a חמיה בבית כלה a bride in the house of her father in -law (after being conlucted to the husband's home); a. v. fr. -- Pem. המות q. v.

חמא, חמא ch.=h. חמה, anger. Dan. III, 13; 19.
חמא m. (חמם; cmp. חמם) radish. Ab. Zar. 28b bot. לחמה ח׳ Ms. M. a. Ar. (ed. חמה) radishes are good for fever. Pes. 116a וכ׳ ח׳ דחסא קפא against the injurious effects of lettuce apply radishes &c.
חמאה f. (b. h.; v. חמי) [pressed, thick,] (ream or butter. Ber. 63b (ref. to Prov. XXX, 33) תורה של ח׳ the cream of the Law (sound knowledge). B. Mets. 86b בשכר וכ׳ ח׳ as a reward for the offer of cream and milk (Gen. XVIII, 8).

חמד (b. h.; cmp. חמם) 1) [to be hot,] to desire, covet; to be carnally excited. Nidd. 20b חמדתיו (or חמ׳ Pi.) lI had a desire for his embrace. Midr. Till. to Ps. XIX, 11 חמדן מי which (of the two) holds them desirable; Yalk. b. 676 [read החומדין מי. Mekh. Yithro, Bahod. s. 8 שאתה וכ׳ חומד that you may desire his daughter for your son; ח׳ בדבור expressing a desire by words (without thinking of means to obtain the object of his desire). [Ib. ed. Weiss, לחמוד סופו התאוה אם if one desires (what belongs to his neighbor), he will finally covet it (think of means to obtain it). Ib. וכ׳ סופו ח׳ אם if he covets, he will finally nse force and rob. חמדא m. (preced.) (sexual) appetite. Sabb. 152a חמדיה.
חמדה f. (b. h.; preced. wds.) 1) same. Sabb. 152a (expl. אביונה, Koh. XII, 5) ח׳ ו that means the sexual appetite; (Koh. R. to l. c. תאוה). -- 2) desirability, desirable object, prccious gift. Tanh. Sh'moth 29, a. e. שהוא דבר ח׳ מתוך ח׳ something which is the most desirable of all desirable things. Y. Taan. Il, beg. 65a ח׳ של אחד כלי the only precious vessel (the Torah) left to us.
