חנם m. (b. h.; חן) gratuftous act, favor, mostly adv. בח׳, לח׳, ח׳ על gratuitously; for no reason. Ex. R. s. 41 וכ׳ בראתני ח׳ על hast thou created me for no purpose? --- B. Kam. 92b, a. e., v. זרזיר. Ex. R. s. 28, beg. ח׳ נטלה he took it gratuitously. Num. R. s. 1 וכ׳ ח׳ אלו מה as these things (fire, water &c.) are free to all &c. -- מחנת ח׳ an undeserved gift. חנן (חון) (b. h.; cmp. גנן) [to (over, surround,] e, to caress, grace, favor. Sabb. 104a (in children's acrostics) אותך וחן אותך זן sustains and graces thee. Num. R. s. 11 (ref. to Num. VI, 25) בבנים אותך יחון may He favor tthee with (good) children. Ib. (quot. from daily prayers) דעת לאדם חונן אתה thou graciously endowest man with knowledge. Ib. עליהם להוון הקבה עתיד the Lord will in due tme protect them. Sifre Num. 41 תורה בתלמוד יחנך may He grace thee by enabling thee to sludy the Law. Pesik. Asser, p. 97a (ref. to מהונך, Prov. חנף, חנף (b. h.) [to bend, decline from the right path] to be insincere, to flatter; to show favor in courl; to deceeive. Der. Er. Zuta ch.
