חסנא m. (חסן) 1) strength, power. Dan. II, 37; v. חוסנא. - 2) stronghold, store-house (b. h. חסן). -- Pl. חסניא. Targ. Joel I, 17 Ar. (ed. Lag. חוסניא; v. אסנא).
חסף I (cmp. חסל) to peel off; (neut. verb) to be scaly, rough. Pa. חסף to pound grain &c. Y. Sabb. VII, 10b bot. פלפלין ח׳ pounds pepper (cmp. מחספס, Ex. XVI, 14). [Y. B. Mets. II, 8c bot. וחספתה, v. חפס] Ithpa. אתחשף [to become white, cmp. כסף,] to feel ashamed. Targ. II Esth. VI, 12.
חסף II, חספא o. ח׳ I m. (preced.) (=h. חרש) 1) rough clay, דח׳ מאנא clay vessel (common and easily broken). Targ. O. Lev. XI, 33; a. e. -- 2) [something with which to peel or scrape,] fragment of a vessel, potsherd. Targ. Prov. XXVI, 23. -- Yeb. 92b, a. e., v. דלי. Kidd. 18a (prov.) ח׳ ליה יהיבנא . . . נקיט he had a pearl in his hand, and we give him a sherd, i. e. for a valuable ob- ject we give him a valueless paper; a. fr. -- Pl. חספין, ה׳. Gen. חספא, ח׳ II m. (חסף; cmp. כסופא) shame; (cmp. b. h. בשת) idol. Y. Ned. I, 37a top (in answer to the question, ׳Does not heres mean a sherd?) לח׳ קריין . . . אומות לשון כספא (heres may be used as a substitute for חרם) for it is a gentile dialect, the Nabateans say hispa for kispa (כסופא) (which means shame or idol); Y. Naz. I, beg. 51a (corr. acc.); v. Ned. 10b top.
חספיה pr. n. pl. Haspiah (Hasbeya), a border town in Northern Palestine. Y. Dem. II, 22d top; Tosef. Shebi. IV, 10 צפיח ed. Zuck. (Var. חצפיא, צפיא).
חספניתא f. (חסף) 1) scaly skin. Num. R. s. 19; Koh. R. to VII, 23 דנונא לח׳ . . . . רגלוי the feet of chickens resemble (as to their covering) the scale-covered skin of the fish, v. חרספיתין. -- 2) scab, eruption. Sabb. 133b, sq. ח׳ ליה . . . דמשי מאן האי (Ms. M. חוספנתא) he who washes his face and does not dry it well, will get a scab. Ab. Zar. 28b, sq. (Rashi; חוס׳).
חסר, חסר f (b. h.; cmp. חסל) [to scrape of,] to diminish, take of; to be diminished, less; to want, miss; to be imperfec. Snh. 68a וכ׳ מרבותי חסרתי ולא yet I skimmed of the knowledge of my teachers no more than a. dog takes who licks out of the sea. Ib. וכ׳ חסרוני ולא they skimmed of my knowledge &c.; Cant. R. to I, 3 וכ׳ חסרתיה לא what wisdom I skimmed of the Law, was no more than &c., v. זכרות. Ib. וכ׳ חסרוה רבותי my teachers carried off at least a real smattering of it &c. B. Kam. 20a bot. חסרתיך מאי what loss have I occasioned to thee?-- Ib.b, a. fr. חסר . . . נהנה זה the one profits while the other loses nothing (therefore can claim no damages). Lev. R. s. 1 חסרת מה, v. דעה. Men. 30a, a. e. is it possible וכ׳ ח׳אות ס״ת that the Book of the Law wanted one letter yet (to be written) &c. -- Pesik. R. s. 3 (ref. to עלי מתה, Gen. XLVIII, 7) שחסרתיה for I miss her; a. fr. Pi. חיסר to lessen, omit; to deprive. Ker. 6a אי׳ וכ׳ אחת if he left out one of its ingredients. Erub. 13a וכ׳ מחסר אתה שמא for if thou omit one letter. Koh. R. to I, 15 (ref. to חסרון, ib.) וכ׳ עצמו מח׳ משאדם as soon as a man deprives himself of the words of the Law (neglect- ing tthem); ib. מחסיר (Hif.). Y. Snh. XI, beg. 30a אפי׳ חי׳ לא even if on infdicting an injury (v. חבורה) he did not create a diminution (open wound); a. fr. -- Part. pass. מחוסר, constr. מחוסר wanting, reguiring. R. Hash. 6a זמן מח׳ wanting time, i. e. too young for sacrifice. Ker. II, 1 כפרה מח׳ requires a ceremony of atonement (before he may partake of a sacred meal). Gen. R. s. 32, a. e. אמנה מח׳, v. אמנה I. חסר, חסר ch. same. Targ. Y. Ex. XVI, 1s (o. ed. Berl. חסר, oth. ed. חסר, חסיר) had less. Targ. Deut. II, 7; a. fr. -- Nidd. 68a חסרת, v. דודא; a. e. Pa. חסר 1) same, V. supra. -- 2) to lessen, deprive, reduce. Targ. Ps. VIII, 6. Targ. Koh. IV, 8; a. fr. -- Snh. 22a וכ׳ חסריה v. גנבא; a. e. -- Part. pass. מחשר (v. pre- ced. Pi.) wanting. Targ. Y. Num. XI, 32. -- Bets. 24a; Bekh. 39a, a. fr. מחסרא חסורי (or מיחסרא thpa.) the relation is defective (a clause has been omitted).
חסר II m., חסרה, חסי׳ f. 1) wanting, defective; less. Sabb. VII, 2 אלת הה׳ ארבעים forty (labors) less one. B. Bath. VII, 2, v. הן. Ib. 89b וכ׳ ח׳ מדה a measure too small or too large. Tosef. Taan. I, 2 ח׳ השנה . . אם if the year had a deficiency of rain; Y. ib. I, 64b; a. fr. -- Pl חסירים, רין . . .; חסירות. Macc. 23a כח חסירי of feeble physics; a. fr. --Esp. a) (calendar) חסר a defective month (of 29 days), opp. מלא of thirty days. B.
