חפר m. (חפר) grave-digging. Y. Taan. IV, end, 69a הח׳ בטל the grave-digging (for the generation of the wilderness) ceased; Lam. R. introd. (R. Z'era). Y. l. c. לה׳ צאו go out for grave-digging; (Lam. R. l. c.; Midr. Sam. ch. XXXII, end לחפור).

חפש (b. h.; cmp. חפר), Pi. חיפש to dig, search. Pes. II, 3 אחריו לחפש . . .. כל what the dog cannot reach by digging for it. Sabb. 89a וכ׳ חיפשתי I searched all over the world. Cant. R. to I, 1 וכ׳ אחר מחפש אתה אם if thou wilt dig after the words of theLaw as for secret treasures; a. fr.

חפש (b. h.) [to be white, cmp. Arab. hafae decorticare, cmp. הפר II,] to be free (cmp. חורII). V. next w. Pi. חיפש to deliver. Pesik. R. s. 8 (ref. to אחפש, Zeph. I, 12) וכ׳ אחפש שי״ן אלא סמי״ך קורא תהא לא read not the word with fSamme but with Shin, shall deliver &c.'; Yalk. Zeph. 567. Pu. חופש to be set free. Kerith. 11a(ref. to Lev. XIX, 20) ח׳ דהוא מכלל this implies that he (her betrothed) has been liberated, is a freedman.
חפשי (b. h.; preced.) 1) fem. freedom. Pesik. R. s. 8 (ref. to Zeph. I, 12) לח׳ אותה אני מוציא I shall lead her out to liberty (v. preced.); a. fr. -- 2) masc. free, excmpt. Nidd. 61b, a. e. (ref. to Ps. LXXXVIII, 6) נעשה . .. . . כיון וכ׳ ח׳ when one is dead, one is free from religious duties. Tanh. Emor 2 (ref. to ויתחפש, I Sam. חפשושיתא f. (preced. wds.) scrapings, sediment. Lam. R. introd. (R. Abbahu2), (interpretingEzek. XXIV, 6) בגווה דחפשושיתה whose sediments (lowest classes) remain within her; (Ar. ed. Koh. לגווה דחפישותא יורה); Yalk. Ez. 362.
חפת or חפה f. (חפף I v. חיפא) border of a gar- ment (limbus), a kind of front bosom in which things can be hidden. Sabb. X, 3 (92a) חלוקו ובח׳ Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note, ed. ובשפת) in the bosom of his shirt. Yoma 77b חלוקו מח׳ . . . ובלבד Ms. M. (ed. ח׳ מתחת) provided he takes not his hand out of the bosom of his shirt (to throw his cloak over his shoulder). Sabb. 96b, v. תיפא. -- Denom.
חפת to provide with a bosom or border. Part. pass. חפות. Shek. III, 2 ח׳ בפרגוד . . . התורם אין he who takes the money out of the Temple cell must not enter with a bordered cloak (in order not to create suspicion; Ms. M. האפות, Mish. Pes. החפות, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.). -- Pl. חפותין. Midr. Sam. ch. XXI וכ׳ ח׳ נמצאו the garments were found (to ft David) forming a bosom, not dragging along &c.; (Lev. R. s. 26, a. e. לו עשויין as if made for him). Pi. חיפת to fold the bosom. Tosef. Ber. VII, 18 לחסות וכ׳ חי׳ לא והוא חלוק לו ed. Zuck. (Var. הפך) to form the bosom of his shirt, while he never had &c.

חפתא, חי׳ ch.=h. חפת. Gen. R. s. 75 בחפתי יהיבתיה (בחי) I put him in my pocket, i e. I outwitted him. -- Denom. תפת, part. pass. pl. חפיתין bosomed. Ib. s. 100; Y. Kil. IX, 32b top ח׳ חיורין (מאנין) white, bosomed garments; Y. Keth. XII, 35a top חפותין. Y. M. Kat. III, 83c top (expl. סנטיריה) ח׳ רלא מאנין garments with- out bosoms; (Gen. R. s. 100 בזיעין דלא, v. סנטרא). Af. אחפת to put in the bosom, i. e. to outwit. Gen. R. s. 80 ואתחפתון למחפת סברון they intended to outwit (Jacob), and they were outwitted. חץ (b. h.; חצץ I) 1) wedge, arrow. Mikv. X, 8 שהוא הץ באדם תחוב an arrow sticking in a person's body; Tosef. ib. VII (VIII), 9. Arakh. 15b אמה מ״ה עד ח״ן the range of an arrow is forty five cubits. Ib. לשון אלא חץ אין arrow means (an evil) tongue (ref. to Jer. IX, 7); a. fr. [Y. Keth. II., beg. 26a שחיצה, read; שחציה) -- Pll. חצים, חצין, חי׳. Lam. R. to III, 12 (expl. לח״ן כמטרה ib.) וכ׳ ח׳ כקורת like the post for arrows (for military practice) at which all shoot &c. -- Tanh. Nitsab. 1 (ref. to- Deut. XXXII, 23) וכ׳ כלין חצי my arrows will be spent, but they (Israel) shall not cease; ib. וכ׳ כלין חציו his arrows will be spent, but the post will remain; Sot. 9a. B. Kam. 22a חציו משום אשו he is responsible for his fire, because it is his arrows (i. e. his action), opp. ממונו משום because it is his property which caused the damage.
