חקיקה f. (חקק) digging out, engraving. Gitt. 20a היא עתיבה לאו ח׳ engraving is not writing (for legal purposes).
חקירה f. (חקר) search, speculation, study. Y. Keth. VII, 31c bot., a. e. חכם חקירת . . . נדר a vow which re- quires the study of a scholar (to find out means of ab- solving). -Esp. examination of witnesses, cross-examin- ation. R. Hash. 25b העדים חקירת the hearing of witnesses (testifying to having seen the first appearance of the new crescent). Snh. חקק (b. h.; cmp. חוק) to draw a circle, to limit; 1) (de- nom. of תק) to legislate. Y. Kil. I, 27b top, a. e. שהקקתי, v. חוק. Num. R. s. 19, beg., v. חוקעה; a. fr. -- 2) to hollow out, to shape a receptacle. Y. Bets. I, 60bbot. שחקקה קערה קוף a dish which an ape has hollowed out. --Part. pass. חקוק, f. חקוקה. Tosef. B. Bath.
