טוב I (b. h.) to be good, fit, handsome, valuable. Hif. הטיב 1) to prepare, outfit, dress, adorn. Gen. RR. s. 26, v. טבת. Ib. s. 83 (play on מהיסבאל, Gen. XXXVI, 39) היו אלוהות מטיבי they were dressers of idols; שהיו וכ׳ עצמן מטיבין they adorned themselves in honor of the idols. Ib. וכ׳ נשים מטיבי they dressed women for their wedding; a. e. -- Esp. (הנרות את) ה׳ to trim, cleanse the lamps. Yoma III, 4 ולהטיב. Ib. I, 2. Ib. 14b ייטיב; a. fr. --- V. הטבה. --2) to turn a dream unto good (saying, ׳I have dreamt a good dream'). Ber. 55b וכ׳ בפני יטיבנו he shall turn it in the presence of three persons, and say &c. -- 3) to do good, be beneficent. Ib. IX, 2 הטוב והמטיב who is good and beneficent. טוב II m., טובה f. (b. h.) 1) good; a good thing. Ber. 5a (ref. to Ps. XXXIX, 3) וכ׳ אלא ט׳ אין under good the Torah is meant. lIb. 60b ט׳ מדה ו this refers to a good dispensaiion; a. v. fr. -טוב־ יום (abbr. י״ט) festival. Bets. I, 1; a. fr. -- טוב כי (ref. to Gen. I, 4) day-time. Pes. 2a. -- Ber. V, 3 (33b) וכ׳ טוב על thy name be praised for the good (thou doest). - לטוב זכור, v. זכר. -- טובה עין, v. כין. -- Pl. טובים, f. טובות. Ber. l. c.
