Sifra B'huck. Par. 2, ch. VIII (ref.to וביען יען, Lev. XXVI, 43) וכ׳ בראש ראש וכי have I indeed paid them item for item (for all their sins)? -- Ruth R. to II, 19; Lev. R. s. 34 עני הוא וען הוא ובי׳ י׳ bbecause and ecause' (Lev. l. c.) ya an and ani have the same letters (intimating because they have rejected my statutes concerning the poor').
יענה f. (b. h.; cmp. ענה) ostrich; also הי׳ בת (v. Ges. H. Diet. s. v.). Hull. 64b (argument about the meaning of הי׳ בת concluded) י׳ בת וכתיב י׳ כתיב the Bible uses y. a. bath y. indiscriminately. Y. Sabb. I, 3d, v. נעמית.
*יעף (b. h.; cmp. עוף) to be bent, to be tired. Pi. ייעף to tire, annoy. Tanh. Vayera 22.. תשגי אל לנו ליעף do not mind him (Satan), for he came only to annoy us; v., however, יצף.
יעץ (b. h.; v. עוץ, cmp. אוץ) [to press,] to encourage, plan; to advise. Ber. 61a יועצות כליות the kidneys are the seat of deliberation. Ib. וכ׳ לטובה יועצתו אחת one (kidney) urges him to do good etc. -- Snh. 76b היועצףוכ׳, v. זהיר. Ber. sb וכ׳ יועצים אין וכשיועצים and when they (the Medians) hold council, they meet in open air. Snh. 87a יוען זה ממך hidden from thee' (Deut. XVII, 8) that means (the need of) a counselor (Sifre Deut. 152 עצה זו). Hull. 11a (expl. העצה לעמת, Lev. III, 9) יועצות שהכליות ממקום from where the deliberating kidneys are seated, v. supra. -- Tem. 16a (play on יעבן, I Chr. IV, 9) וכ׳ וריבן שיען he advised and advanced the study of the Law &c. Snh. 106a, a. e. שי׳ בלעם Balaam who gave his advice (encouraging the oppression of the Israelites); a. fr. -- [Ber. 3b; Snh. 16a, v. infra.] Hithpa. התייען, Nithpa. נתיען to ask advice; to con- sult with (with ב). Yalk. Ps. 776 באחיתופל מתיעצים (Ber. 3b; Snh. 16a יועצין, read; נועצין, Nif.) they deliberated with Ah. -- Erub. 53b (in enigmatic speech) במכתיר נתי׳ took counsel of the Nasi (v. כתר). Sifre Num. 157 שהיו וכ׳ על מתייעצים they were planning against Israel; Yalk. Num. 785 מיעצים.

יער m. (b. h.) forest. B. Kam. 32b (ref. to Deut. XIX, 5) וכ׳ י׳ ומה when in the case of unintentional homicide in the forest where each entered of his own accord &c.; Sifre Deut. I82 וכ׳ רשות ו׳ מה as in the case . . . . in the forest, both had a right to enter. Cant. יפה m., יפה f., pl. יפין, יפות (b. h.; יפי to join, cmp. אוף I, a. יפע) [welloined, cmp. כשר, יאה a. Arab. wafa,] 1) appropriate; strong, healthy; handsome, beautiful, fine (of build); auspicious; (adv.) well, right. Ned. 66b (an ambiguous expression, v. מום) וכ׳ שביך י׳ מום שתראי עד until thou showest to R. .. . an appropriate blemish (or 'something handsome) in thee; וכ׳ קורין י׳ it was nice (ap- propriate) that they named her lakhlukhith (aversion).Ber. 4a דנתי י׳ have Iwell argued (was Iright)?; חייבתי י׳ was I right in convicting?-- Ib. 34b, a. e. ומיעוטי׳ קשה רובן a large dose of them is injurious, a small onewholesome (or becom- ing). Kidd. 21a לעולם ליגאל כחו י׳ the privilege of its redemption remains unimpaired forever (up to the jubilee year); שנייה בשנה . . . י׳ the privilege of redemption in the second year is unimpaired; opp. כחו הורע.
