pl. כבונות clasped, esp. sheep wearing a clatsped cover (v. כבינתא) for the protection of their wool. Sabb. V, 2; Tosef. ib. IV (V), 1 למילת כ׳ covered for the sake of the fine wool. Bab. ib. 54a למילת אותן שמכבנין (not אותו). - V. כבינא. Pi. כבן to clasp a wrap; to wrap up. Sabb. l. c., v. supra. Ib. (defining לבן צמר) אותו שמכבנין . . . . נקי כצמר למילת ike the wool of a new-born lamb which they wrap up for the sake of the wool; Shebu. 6b אותו שמכבנין Ms. M. (ed. incorr. בו).
כבן ch. same, Pa. כבין to fasten; to put on a כבינתא. Targ. Job XXIII, 9 (h. text יעכף). Ib. XXXI, 36 אכבניניה Ms. Var. (ed. Lag. אכרכיניה, v. כרך; oth. ed. אכרביניה, v. כרב I; ed. wil. ארכבניה, v. רכב; h. text ענד).
כבנה, v. כבינה.
כבס (b. h.) to press, tread. Pi. ככס to wash (clohes). M. Kat. III, 1 מכבסין ואלו במועד and these are permitted to wash their clothes during the festive week. Taan. 29b; M. Kat. 18a, a. e. לכבסו מותר וכ׳ is permitted to wash it; a. fr. -- Pesik. Eih Korb., p. 61b; Pesik. R. s. 6 (play on כבשים, Num. XXVIII, 3) שהם וכ׳ מכבסים for they (as sacrifices) wash (cleanse) the sins oflsrael. -- Part. pass. מכובס, f מכובסת;pl. מכיבסי; מכובסות. Mikv. X, 4 מכ׳ שהטבילן בגדים garments immersed while still wet from washing. Hithpa. התכבס to be washed. Cant. R. to lI, 5 (play on שלמה) [readn] וכ׳ ומתכבסת מתלכלכת זו שלמה מה as a garment is soiled and washed again &c.; Yalk. ib. 982. Tanh. Vayhi 10 (ref. to Gen. XLIX, 11) בהלכה יטעו אם וכ׳ בתחומו מתכבסת תהא when they err in a decision, it shall be cleansed (atoned for) in his (Judah's) dominion (the Temple); Gen. R. s. 99 (not מתכסים).
כבס, Targ. I Chr. XI, 5, sq., ed. Lag. a. oth., v. כבש.
*כבס, m. (preced.) cleansing material. - Pl. כבסים. Y'lamd. to Num. XXVIII, 3 quot. in Ar. s. v. כבשים (ref. to כבשים, ib.) וכ׳ כ׳ קורין אנו כבשים שכתוב אע׳פ though it is written H'basim (with Sin, sheep), we read F'basim (with Sammekh), for they cleanse Israel's sins.
כבסא, כובסא m. (כבס) something pressed, ball, lump, esp. 1) cluster of dates. Sabb. 67a כבסא תלינן כמאן בדיקלא Ar. (ed. כובסי, Ms. O. כבסי pl., v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 70) by what authority dare we suspend a cluster of dates on a sterile date-tree (and not consider it a for. bidden superstitious practice)? Maec. 8a לכ׳ ומחייה (ed. לכבאסא, Ms. M. a. Rashi לכובסא) and it (the struck twig) struck the cluster. -- 2) (trnsf.) testicles. Shebu. 41a האי הוא לגלימיה .. . ה בכובסי נקטיה that is hold him by his testicles that he may give up his cloak, i. e. this is force worse than laying distress on his property; B. Mets. 101b.
כבר I (b. h.) pr. n., כ׳ נהר river (or channel) K'bar (Chebar) in Babylonia. Gen. R. s. 16 כ׳ ׳ הוא פרת הוא Euphrates and K. are the same. Ib. וכ׳ עצמו בפני כ׳ K. and Euphrates are different rivers. Ib. כלין שמימיו כ׳ it is called K'bar (v. next w.), because its waters give out; יורדיןבכברה ואינן גסין שפירותיו because its fruits are large and go not into the basket; (Yalk. Gen. 22 קלין שמימיו).
כבר II m. (b. h.; = כבר זמן; כבר to be thick, strong, round) a long time since; long ago, already; once. Sabb. 51a, a. e. זקן הורה כ׳ it has already been decided by an authority. Ber. 63a bot. וכ׳ בנית כ׳ you have once built and can no more tear down, (having once praised me, you cannot now censure me). Y. Sabb. XIV, 14c bot. וכ׳ וכ׳ חלה and once when he was taken sick, and &c. Num. R. s. 3, end עליהם נקדתי כ׳ have I not put dots upon them (to mark that the words are spurious)? כבר (denom. of כברה) to sift. Gen. R. s. 4 כובר אדם בכברה . . . if one sifts wheat or straw in a sieve. Ohol. XVIII, 2 כברות בשתי וכוברו and sifts it twice. Maasr. I, 6 משיכבור הקיטניות peas are subject to tithes from the time he sifts them. Ruth R., end וכ׳ הצבר את וכ׳ (not וכבד) and sifted one pile. Y. Ab. Zar. IV, 44b top . . . . טוחנין כוללין, read כוברין; a. fr. -- Part. pass. כבור. Y. Maasr. I, 49a bot. וכ׳ הכ׳ מן from the portion which has been sifted in behalf of that which has not. Nif. נכבר to be siflted. Tosef. Ter. X, 15 ליכבר שדרכו (not ליכבד) which it is customary to sift.
כבר II, Pa. כביר (denom. of כבריתא) to fumigate with sulphur, to bleach. Ber. 27b סלי לכברויי to fumigate baskets. B. Kam. 93b כברויי דכבריה when he (in addition) bleached the wool with sulphur.
*כבר III to be heavy, to grieve; Af. אכביר to irritate, grieve, v. כבד.
כברה f. (b. b.; v. כבר II) 1) a large round vessel (cmp. כוורת). Sabb. 35a בים כ׳ כמין a rock in the sea of the shape (and size) of a K'barah; Tosef. Succ. IIl, 11 כ׳ מלא סלע a rock of the size &c.; Tanh., ed. Bub., B'midb. 2 כמין סלע כ׳ M-. R. (v. ib. note 21); v. כוורת. -- 2) baskett used as a sieve (v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Vannus). Kel. XV, 4 בעהב של כ׳ a household sieve, contrad. to גרנות כברת the large sieve of the threshing floor. Tosef. Bets. I, 20, contrad. to נפה. Taan. 22b ככ׳ גופו כל עשו they made his body (perforated with arrows) like a sieve; M. Kat 28b ככ׳ עשאוהו; Y. Kidd. I, 61a; a. fr. -- Pl. כברות. Ohol. XVIII, 2, v. כבר. Deut. R. s. 6 כברותיו his sieves. Par. III, 11 אבן של כ׳ perforated stone vessels for sifting ashes.
כבריתא, כבריתא, כוב׳ f. (cmp. preced.)-h. גפרית; [a thick porous lump,] sulphur. Targ. Ps. XI, 6 כב׳ Ms. (ed. Wil. כב׳; ed. Lag. כופריתא). Targ. Y. I Gen. XIX, 24 כבריתא (O. a. Y. II גופריתא). Targ.
