כוך m. (= כוכו, v. כיוא) cavity, cave, esp. sepulchral chamber. [Taan. 25b המחרישה כ׳ R. Gersh. (Ms. M. כון, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note, ed. ביך) the cavity made by the plough.) -- Y. B. Bath. III, beg. 13d חזקה בכ׳ . . . המוכר הכ׳ לכל if one sells a burial place (קבר) to his neighbor, as soon as the latter has buried one dead in the chamber, he has the possession of the entire chamber; a. e. -- Pl, כוכין. כוכב, ככב m. (b. h. =כבכב, v. כבב) [rounded, globe,] star, planet. Y. Ber. I, 2b יום ודאי אחד כ׳ as long as one star only is visible, it is surely day-time. Hor. 10a אחד כ׳ וכ׳ ועולה יש Ms. M. (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) there is a certain star (comet) which appears once in seventy years. Gen. כוכביתא f. a little globe, v. כוביתא.
כוכבת f. (preced. wds.) the planet Venus, morning star, evening star. Yalk. Jer. 276 (ref. to Jer. VII, 18) שהיו הכ׳ היא זו השמים למלכת עובדים (not מלאכת) they wor- shipped the queen of the heavens, that is Venus; Pesik. R. s. 31 הכוכבים (corr. acc.). Ib. לכ׳ עובדים ירושלם בני היו וכ׳ (not לכוכבים) the Jerusalemites worshipped Venus openly &c. Ib. הכ׳ שכשתעלה (not הכוכבים), v. כווי.
