כונא, m כונא m. (v. כווא; cmp. חופן a. כף) the hollow of the hand, handful (as a measure), spoonful (mostly in medicine; cmp. Lat. coclear). [Editions, except ed. Sonc., have ב׳, Ar. a. Mss. כ׳, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. c. infra.] Sabb. 110b וכ׳ דכמונא כ׳ (Ms. M. כי׳) one handful of cumin-seed, and one of &c. Gitt. 70a וכ׳ דחמרא כ׳ a spoonful of old wine. -- Pl. כוני or כוני. Erub. 29b (ed. כונה, כוו׳ f. (כון, Pi. a. Hithpa.) intention; attention; devotion. Ber. 13a כ׳ צריכות מצוות ש״ב shall we derive fom this (Mish. II, 1 וכ׳ לבו כיון אם) that religious exer- cises require the intention (of complying with the law, and must be repeated if performedwithout such intention)? R. Hash. 28b, a. fr. כ׳ צריכות אין מצוות the intention of compliance is not indispensable; Erub. 95b כ׳ בעי לצאת (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. notes 90 a. 100) in order to have complied with the law, intention of compliance is re- quired. Ber. 13b קריאה בלא כ׳ meditating (on the Biblical passage to be recited) without audible recitation. Ib. עד הלב כונת צריכה כאן up to this (sh'ma o ehad) atten- tion to the meaning is indispensable. Meg. 20a (ref. to Deut. VI, 6) הדברים הן הן הלב כ׳ אחר the value of 'the words' (the recitation) depends on the attention of the mind (devotion). XXXII, 6) שברא וכ׳ באדם כ׳ הקב״ה the Lord has created carefully ar- ranged chambers in man, one of which being disturbed man cannot live; Sifre Deut. 309 מבפנים כנונים כנונים עשאך וכ׳ (prob. to be read כוננים); (Yalk. iib. 942 בסיסים, v. בסיס; cmp. כן II).
