כחל, v. כוחל.
כחל (b. h.; denom. of כוחל) to paint the eyelids (for medical or for cosmetic purposes). Sabb. VIII, 3 (78b) וכ׳ לכחול כדי a quantity sufficient for painting one eye. Ib. 80a וכ׳ כותלות צנועות chaste (veiled) women paint only one eye. Ib. X, 6 הכוחלת she who paints her eyes (on the Sabbath); a. fr. -- Part. pass. כחול; f. כחולח, pl. כחולות. Gen. כחל I ch. 1) same. Targ. II Kings IX, 30; a. e. -Sabb. 80a כחלי לא הא . . . עין but people never paint one eye only b- 2) (ironically, v. infra) to blind the eyes. כחל (tradit. pronunc. כחחל) m. (prob. from its reddish color, v. כחלי) udder, bag. Hull. VIII, 3. Tosef. ib. VIII, 8 מניקה של כ׳ the bag of a milk-cow; a. fr.
כחל II, כחלא ch.same. (Targ Ps. LXXIV, 6 some ed., read כחדא.]- Hull. 110a דכחלא תבשילא Ar. (ed. דכחל) a dish made of udder. -- Pl. כחלי. Ib. כ׳ . . . בסורא in Sura. they do not eat udders. Ib. לכחלייהו כ״ע אפקינהו (not לכחלינהו) all of them brought out the udders they were about to cook.

כחש (b. h.; cmp. בחד; cmp. חסי, חסיא &c.) 1) to fail, be reduced, be lean, opp. בריא, שמן. B. Kam. 34a כשעת כ׳ וכ׳ if the injured ox became reduced after being wound- ed, damage is assessed according to the value at the time of standing before court; Y. ib. III, end, 3d הכחיש. Gen. R. s. 53 (ref. to Hab. III, 17) היו כוחשים (Sarah's face) was haggard (and the announcement of the angels made it shine like olive oil); Yalk. Hab. 565 כחושים; [oth. inter- pret, v. infral. -- Part. pass. כחוש, f כחושה; pl. כחושים, כחושות lean, reduced, weak. Snh. 78a כ׳ כח a weak force. Hull. 97a (in Chald. diction). B. Kam. 6b כ׳ אכל if he ate fruits of a garden-bed with scanty fruits; Gitt. 48b; a. fr. -- 2) (cmp. כזב) to be false. Gen. R. . c. היו כוחשים were they (the angels) false (deceiving) --- Hif. הבחיש 1) to be reduced, fail, deteriorate. Y. B. Keth. 20a וכ׳ מכחישין אין . . . מזימין שאין כשם as an evid- ence of alibi cannot be taken up except by confrontation, so cannot contradictory evidence &c. Ber. 27b החי יכול וכ׳ להכחיש can the living contradict the living? Gen. R. s. 48, beg. וכ׳ מכחישני אתה מה מפני why dost thou con- tradict me (declare me wrong) in the presence of my servant?-- Sifra introd., v. כרע; a. fr. Pi. כיחש to be false; to flatter. כחש ch. same, to be lean, weak; v. כחיש. - Snh. 95a חיליא כ׳ his strength failed him. B. Mets. 104b (prov.) מרה ליכחוש ולא ארעא חכחוש Ms. M. (ed. כחשא) let the land deteriorate (exhausted by strong seeds) rather than that its owner become reduced (by reduced income); a. e. Af. אכחש 1) to reduce, weaken, mpair. Nidd. 47b; Yeb. 97a אכחשוהו reduce him (by scanty food); B. Bath. 155b אכחשיה Ms. M. (corr. acc., ed. ליכחוש, v. infra). B. . Kam. 34a וכ׳ ואנא מכחשה את thou didst ruin her (by neg- lect), and I should pay for it?-- 2) to contradict. Gen. כחשא m. (preced.) reduction, deterioration. B. Kam. 59a גופנא כהש the weakening of the vine (by allowing the grapes to remain on it until they are ripe). B. Mets. 101b דארעא כ׳ משום because he exhausted the soil by planting trees.
