כיפת, constr. of כיפה; כיפת, constr. of כיפה. -[Tosef. Ohol. XII, 2, a. e. כיפת ed. Zuck., v. כופת].
כיפתא, כיפא, כיפא f. ch. =h. כיפה 1) vault, vaulted chamber; arcade. Y. Snh. VII, 25d top כיפ׳ תפשיתון the vaulted chamber (in the bath) seized them (kept them spell-bound). Y. Naz. VII, 56a ttop דקסרין כ׳ the arcade of the gate of Caesarea (considered unclean); Y. Ber. III, 6a דק׳ כפתה. -- Pl. כישין. Targ. II Esth. I, 5, v. כפף. -- 2) bow, curve. Targ. Job XLI, 12 כיפא דעביד which forms a bow (in boiling over; h. text ואגמן); cmp. כיה beg.
כיפתא, כפתא f. (כפף) 1) stocks, an instrument of torture in the shape of a wooden collar. Targ. Jer. XX, 2, sq.; ib. XXIX, 26 (h. text מהפכת, which Rashi explains by כיפה). -- 2) (v. כפיפה) mussle with fodder basket. Snh. 98b דחמריה דכי׳ בטולא Ms. M. (ed. דכופיתא, v. כפותא) in the shadow of the basket of the Messiah's ass. -- Pl. כיפתא, כפ׳. Midr. Sam. ch. XXI (expl. ירומו, Ps. CXL, 9, v. זמם) כפתוי רומם(some ed.כפפתוי) lift highhismuzzle (strengthen his enemies); Lev. R. s. 21; Yalk. Sam. 126 כתפוי חזק (corr. acc.) tighten his muzzle. -- [Y. Shebi. כיר (כיד), Pi. כייר (כייד) (denom. of כירה II or of כד II) [to do the work of the stove-setter or of the potter (כייר or כייד, v. ברכייר),] to cement; to lay out with tiles, panels &c. [Ar. reads ר, editions mostly ד.] B. Kam. 51a bot. וכ׳ וסייד. . . אחד (Ms. F, וכייר וסייר) if one dug a pit ten handbreadths deep, and another came and lined it with plaster and cemented it; Mekh. Mishp., N'zik., s. 1. Ab. Zar. III, 747b) לאליל וכיירו סיידו Mish. (Bab. ed.לע״ז וכיידו) he plastered the room and put tiles on (v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Abacus) designing it for idolatrous purposes. Ib. סיידה וכ׳ וכיירה (Ms. M. וציירה) if one plastered and stuccoed a. stone (slab) for an idolatrous purpose. Gen. R. s. 28 סיידה ירהwו וכיירה he plastered and panelled and painted the wedding chamber; Lam. R. to IV, 11 וכיידה. Tosef. Sot. VIII, 7וכ וסיידוהו כיירוהו (Var. כידוה, כירוה) they panelled the stone and stuccoed it and wrote upon it. B. כירה, כרה f. (b. h.; כרר) a circle, esp. banquet. B. Bath. 75a (expl. יכרו Job XL, 30, with ref. to II Kings VI, 23) סעודה אלא כ׳ אין kerah means banquet.
כירה If.(כרה) 1) digging, making a pit. Mekh. Mishp., N'zik., s. 11 (prob. to be read; כריה). -- 2) [selecting,] buy- ing, sale. R. Hash. 26a כ׳ למכירה קורין היו (in the sea- towns) I heard them call a sale kirah (which accounts for כריתי, Gen. L, 5); Sot. 13a.
כירה II f. (b. h. כרים; cmp.כור II) a portable stove on feet, with caves for two pots, v. כופח. Sabb. 38b. Ib. III, 1. Ib. 138b, v. ירך. Kel. VI, 1 כ׳ . . . שתי העושה if one im- provises a stove by means of two stones; Tosef. ib. B. Kam. V, 3 כרה ed. Zuck. (R. S. to Kel. VI, 4 כירה). Kel. VI, 2 הטבחים כירת the butchers stove (improvised with sev- eral stones). Y. Bets. II, 61c top סתומה שכירתך בשעה at a time when thine own (private) stove is closed (when you are not permitted to cook), opp. רבד כירת thy Mas- ter's stove (the altar); Bab. ib. 20b; Tosef. Hag. II, 10; a. fr. -- Pl כירים. Kel. VI, 3 כ׳ שתי two fire-places. -- Dual form; כיריים, כירים. Sabb. III, 2. B. Mets. VIII, 7. Sifra. XII טמא זה כ׳ (Var. טמאה זו כ׳; v. II Vers., ed. Schechter, ch. XXVIII) this stove is unclean.

XXX, 23) (when thy cattle has pasture) כ׳ כ׳ בעולם מרובה Ar. hail hail is largely heard in the world (good-will prevails); [ed. אדון קירי עבד כ׳; ashi קירי כ׳ בעולם מרובה (ie א~ae, hail, O Lord &c.), misinterpret- ing; אדון קירי עבד כ׳ (v. next w.), which gloss came into the text of the ed. in place of the original passagel.
