כנון m. (preced. wds.) craft, artfulness. Koh. R. to IX, 14 (expl. מצודים ib.) ועקמון כ׳ Craft and Trap (alleg- orical names of towers); Yalk. ib. 989 כמן; Gen. R. s. 33 וכמנן עקמן Tricky and Vily.
כמס (b. h.; cmp. כמן) to hide, store away. Part. pass. כמוס. Yalk. Ex. 165 מעינינו כ׳ הוא he is hidden from our sight; Pirke d'R. El. ch. XLVIII. - V. כומסה.
כמס m. (preced.) subterranean prison (carcer). Yalk. Hos. 532 וכ׳ כ׳ לו נותן . . . . . אילוגין קורא בתחלה frst he reads the charge, then he strikes him (to extort con- fession), and then he assigns to him a prison &c.; Pesik. Shub., p. 159b (corr. acc.).
כמס ch. (v. preced.) store-room, cellar (Assyr. כמס, Schr. KAa p. 559). B. Bath. 145b כ׳ עתיר rich of stores.
כמסת, כמיסת . (v. מסתא; a phrase borrowed fr. Deut. XVI, 10; 17, v. Targ. Y.; =h. כדיי) adeguate, able,. worthy. Targ. Y. II Lev. XXIII, 29 וכ׳ דכ׳ that is able (or of adequate age) to fast. Targ. Y. Gen. XX, 16. Targ. II Sam. VII, 18; Targ. IChr. XVII, 10 כ׳ אנא לית I am not worthy (h. text אנכי מי).
כמר (b. h., v. כמה, כמן, כמס) 1) [to heat,] to make כומר (v. כומר I), to produce shrinking and maturing of fruits by underground storage or by exposure to the sun. Tosef. Men. IX, 10 אותן וכומרין . . היו לא (Var. וכורמין) they did not cut the grapes and let them shrink (before putting them in the press), but cut and immediately pressed them. B. Mets. 89b וכ׳ באדמה יכמור ולא (Ar. יכמר Pi., v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note 90) the laborer must not hide grapes in the ground (to eat them afterwards). -- 2) (trnsf.) to watch, guard. -- Denom. כומר II. -- 3) to lay a trap, v. infra. Pi. כימר, Hif. הכמיר 1) to hide in the ground, heat. Maasr. IV, 1, v. כמן. B. Mets. l. c., v. supra. -- 2) (denom. of מכמר) to lay a trap, net. Tosef. Yeb. XIV, 6 מכמרין שהיו מכמרות that were laying nets; Yeb. 121a מכמורין מכ׳; Y. ib. XVI, 15d top מ׳ לכמור. Nif. נכמר 1) to shrink, fall n by the effect of the heat, to tumble inward. Y. B. Mets. X, beg. I2c כתנור ׳ if the house fell in like a furnace, opp. לחון נפל. -- 2) (trnsf.) with רחמים, to be bent over, to feel compassion (cmp. גלגל). Yalk. Gen. 150יוס של רחמיו נכמרו Joseph was moved to compassion; (Tanh. Vayigg. 4 ר׳ נתגלגלו).
כמר ch. same, 1) to hide, keep warm (corresp. to h. טמן). Y. Sabb. IV, beg. 6d (read] גיפתאא גו כמראי, v. גיפתא. Ib. וכ׳ גו כמרה put it in &c. B. Mets. 74a ועיולי מכמר מחוסר וכ׳ requiring heating (of grapes) and carrying to the press. -- 2) to shrink, be wrinkled. Pes. 58a בישרא מכמר the shrinking and drying up of the meat (from lying over too long). --3) (with רחמין as object) to feel compassion. Targ. Y. Deut. XIII, 18. Targ. Ps. כמריאתא f. pl. (preced. wds.) withered, black fruits. Lam. R. to V, 10 (expl. נכמרו ib.) כ׳ כאילין wrinkled like withered fruits.
כמרוסא, Num. R. s. 12, v. קמרוטא.
כמש (cmp. כמר) to wrinkle, wither. Y. Maas. Sh. IV, 54d bot. שיכמושו עד until they are withered. -- Part. pass. כמוש, f כמושה; pl. כמושין, כמושות. Lev. R. s. 23; Cant. R. to II, 2 וכ׳ כ׳ והיא . . שושנה מה as the lily, when tthe heat comes upon it, is withered, but blooms again when the dew falls . . . וכ׳ כ׳ נראין so does Israel . . . seem to be withered &c. Succ. 31a bot. כמושין withered fruits, contrad. to יבשין dried up; a. fr. Nif. נכמש same. Cant. R. to II, 1 להכמש נוחה withers easily.
כמש ch. same. B. Bath. 16b וכ׳ דכמשי וכיון and when they withered, they knew (that an accident had befallen their friend). - Part. כמיש, pl. כמישין. Y. Pes. IV, end, 31c; Esth. R. to I, 4, v. זליל.
כמת־ (v. כמא a. דכמא) like. - Targ. Ps. LXXIII, 15 דמכמתהון ed. Lag. (oth. ed. דכמתהון) (something) which is of the nature of their speeches.

כן I (b. h.; v. כי, כך) so, thus. Ber. 11b אומר הוא וכן and so we read; a. v. fr. -כן־ אם, כן אם אלא, v. אם. -- לכן for such a purpose. Y. Maas. Sh. II, 53b bot. ל׳ דרכו it is usually employed for such a purpose. Y. Erub. VII, beg. 24b ל׳ ייחדו he devoted it to such &c. -כן־ על יתר, מכן יתר, v. יתר I.

כן II, with suff. כנ־, m. (b.h.; כון orכנן) 1) base, stand, rest. Cant. R. to I, 1 (ref. to חלום והנה, IKings III, 15) כנו על . . . החלום the dream (after he awoke) remained standing on its firm stand (was realized); Yalk. Kings 175. Yoma V, 3, sq. וכ׳ כ׳ על הניחו he set it down on the stand. Tosef. Kel. B. Mets. II, 17 כן מחוסרין vessels that have lost their rest; a. fr. -- Pl. כנים, constr. כי. Kel. XI, 3. -
