כנימה f. (denom. of כנם; cmp. כלמתא) vermin, moth. Sifre Deut. 40. Y. B. Kam. IX, beg. 6d הכ׳ מן הרקיבו if the grain became ruined by moths, contrad. to תולעים. Makhsh. VI, 1; Tosef. ib. III, 1הכ מפני in order to prevent the grain from getting mothy. -- Pl. כנימות. Midr. Till. to Ps. XXIII כ׳ עושין היו ולא (ed. כניסא, v. כנישא.
כניסה f. (כנס) 1) gathering, assembly. Meg. I, 1 מקדימין הכ׳ ליום read the M'gillah in advance on the gathering (market) day before Purim. Ib. 4b; a. e. -- 2) entering, opp. יציאה. Y. Erub. V, 22c; Midd. I, 3, v. יציאה. -- B. Mets. 104a לחופה כניסתן בשעת when they were being led to the wed- ding chamber. Keth. 12a. Ber. IV, 2 לבהמ בכניסתו on his entering college (for teaching and judging). B. Mets. 83b בכניסתו the time consumed in going home, v. פועל; a. fr. -- 3) keeping in, detention. Yalk. כנישא, כנישתא, כנש׳ f. (preced.) 1) gathering; assembly. Targ. O. Gen. I, 10 מיא כנישת בית (h. text מקוה). Targ. Ex. XXXV, 1(ed. Amst. כניש׳). Targ. Joel I, 14. Targ. Ps. XLVIII, 12 (some ed. כנישתא pl., h. text בנות); a. fr. -- Y. Peah I, 15d עליה כ׳ צור איזיל shall I call a meeting against him?; a. e. -- 2) כ׳ or כ׳ בית (בי) synaagogue, school-house. Targ. Ez. כנכב, v. כבכב.
כנן (cmp. כון a. כוננית) to nest. -Denom. כינה. Pi. כנן to form circles, to wind around. Par. VII, 7 יד על יד על . . . . המכנן (Talm. ed. only once יד על) he who winds the rope (for drawing the bucket up) around his hand until a sufficient length is wound up; כננו ואם באחרונה but if he winds it after he has finished drawing; Tosef. ib. VII (VI), 4 ובנאו וחזר ed. Zuck. (Var. וכי, read; וכיננו as R. S. to Par. l. c.). -- Part. pass. מכונן a) wound around. Makhsh. IV, 1 וכ׳ מכ׳ שהוא בחבל with the rope which is wound around the neck of the vessel. -- 2) nested.. Gen. R. s. 37 כביצה מכ׳ shut up in the nest like an egg,. i.. e. selfish; Yalk. Ps. 832 מכונה (corr. acc.).
כנס (b. h.; v. כוס I) 1) to collect, gather; to cover, shelter, bring home. B. Kam. VI, 1 לדיר צאן הכונם he who takes the flock into the stall; a. fr. -- משקה כ׳ to absorb liquids through pores, opp. to הוציא to let liquids escape through pores. Nidd. 49a וכ׳ כנסה אם . . . . יביא get a tub full of water and put the pot in, if it draws water &c. Kel. X, 8 משקה בכונס היו (sub. נקובין) if the vessels were so porous as to be called absorbers of liquids. Nidd. l. c. לידע .. כיצד משקה בכונס ניקב אם how do we examine to find out whether a vessel is porous to the extent of absorbing liquids? (v. supra); a. fr. -- Esp. to take a woman home, to consummate a miarriage by condducting a woman to one's house, to wed, v. אירוסין a. נישואין. Keth. 3b כונסה וברביעי and on the fourth day of the week he weds her. Ib. ומסכנה וכ׳ לכנוס . . . נהגו ואילך and from the days of persecution . . the people adopted the custom to wed on the third day; . . יכנוס לא ובשני but on the second day one must not marry. Y. Yeb. III, 1אמח וכ׳ אמה עלה (the altar) rose one cubit and then receded one cubit; Men. 97 b. --. Y. Erub. VII, 24b bot. (of an inclined plane) אמה עולה שלש וכונס it rises vertically one cubit, while the incline measures three cubits, v. כיבוש. -- Part. pass. כנוס, f. כנוסה. Tosef. Erub. I, 52a כמה כנוסה אפי׳ even if the reduction be ever so large. Nif. נכנס 1) to be brought in, to enter, opp. יצא; to as- semble, meet. Erub. 65a, v. סוד. Ib. 15b ויוצא נ׳ is easily passed in and out. Kel. IX, 7 ׳ . . . מלא when a piece of the size . . . . can be passed, נ׳ לא when it cannot pass (exactly fitting in). Y. Erub.
