כסס 1) to cut, grind, chew, nibble. Tosef. Ber. IV, 6 חטים הכוסם he who chews wheat grains; Ber. 37a; a. fr. -- Numm. R. s. 11 (ref. to אכלת אש, Ex. XXIV, 17) . . . שבע בזו זו כוססות היו seven partitions (strata) of fire were eating into one another; Pesik. Hahod. p. 45a; Pesik. כסס ch. same, 1) to cut, chew. Yoma 81b; Ber. 36b וכ׳ פילפלי כס if one chewed pepper on the Day of Atone- ment. Meg. 7b וכ׳ למיכס בעאי Ishould have liked to chew the plate after it; Yalk. Esth. 1059 דאיכסיסיה (not דאיב׳). -- 2) [to cut or scratch off, peel, diminish, (v. P. Sm. 1777),] to rebuke, chastise (v. כסן). Targ. Prov. IX, 8 תכוס (ed. Lag. תכיס Af.). Af. אכס, אכיס 1) to give to chew. Keth. 77a שערי אכסוהו וכ׳ give El. barley to chew (as to an animal, i e. he is an ignoramus). Ib. וכ׳ אכסוה דא על on account of this (opinion), they gave El. barley to eat in Babylonia. -- 2) to rebuke, chastise. Targ. Prov. l. c., v. supra. Ib. XXVIII, 23.
כסף (b. h.) to peel, whiten (cmp. חסף). - Part. pass. כסוף, pl. כסופים bright. Sire Deut. 13 כ׳ וותיקים distinguish- ed (of position), bright of intellect; ib. Num. 92 וכסופים. Hif. הכסיף 1) to grow pale, fade, wither. Pes. III, 5 (expl. שיאור) וכ׳ כאדם פניו שהבסיפו כל a dough the sur- face of which becomes pale and wrinkled, like (the sight of) a man whose hair (שער) stands up from fright. Nidd. 47a וכ׳ ראש משיכסיף when the centre of the oblate portion of tthe breast begins to be wrinkled; Tosef. ib. VI, 4 משיכס (if). Sabb. 34b התחתון ה׳ when the lower horizon be- comes pale (is no longer red); Y. Ber. I, 2b bot. --Pes. 39a מכסיפין פניו the leaves look faded (and curled); a. e. -- 2) to deteriorate, fall in value, opp. השביח (cmp. חסר). I, 1בכ by (handing to her) an object of value. Yeb. 63b נשמזונותיו בכספו תלויין whose livelihood depends on his money (a money-lender). Shebu. כספיא (b. h.) pr. n. pl. Casifia. Lev. R. s. 5 (ref. to ידים רחבת ארן, Is. XXII, 18) כ׳ זו (some ed. כסיפא, v. Rashi to Is. l. c.) that means the exile to C.
