לויה, ליייה II p לויה f. (לוהה) 1) consort, wife. Yoma 54b top (ref, to וויות, IKings VII, 36), v. ערהI. - 2) (v. next w.) the wailing womsan's company. Y. M. Kat. I, 80a top, [read; ] אמר .. נחמן דבי . .. לוייתה אשה תעורר לא ליויתה a woman must not stir up her company for wail- ing during the festive week; R. N. read ltvyatha (with ref. to לויתן עורר Job III, 8; cmp. אילויותא).
לויה, לוייה f. (לוח) escort, company, esp. the trav- clles esoortt for protection. Sot. IX, 6 ל׳ בלא והנחנוהו and we let him (the stranger) go without protection; (Y. ib. IX, 23a bot. הלוייה). Bab. ib. 46b לל׳ כופין we may force (the inhabitans of a place) to provide escorts for trav- ellers. לוכסן adv. (~o~~, v. אלכסון) athwart, crosswise; di- agonally. Kel. XVIII, 5, v. אלכסון. Dem. VII, 8 שתי נוטל ל׳ חביות he must take two barrels from diagonally oppo- site corners. Ib. ל׳ אחת שורה one row of barrels following the diagonal line. Y. Kil. IV, 29c top לכסן במודד (R. S. to Kil. IV, 6 אלכסמן) when he measures by diagonal lines. Y. לול m. (b. h.; contr. of לעל, apocop. of לעלע = עלעל, cmp. formation of עסך; cmp. עלל, עלעול, עלעל I) 1) mind- ing pathawag, passage way, esp. a small roomm with a staircase leading up to the upper rooms (v. Sm. Ant. s. v. House, Amer. ed. 185, p. 519a). Men. 34a מן פתוח ל׳ לעליה הבית a small room opening (leading) from the ground floor to the upper room. Pes. 34a היה קטן ל׳ וכ׳ there was a small passage way between the graded ascent (כבש) and the altar; ib. 77a (Zeb. 62b אויר; ib. 104a ריוח). -- Pl. לולים, לולין. Y. Erub. לולא ch. same, small room with a staircase. Y. Yoma. I, 38c; Y. Meg. IV, 75c bot. וכ׳ עביד דהוה אילעא דו׳ ל׳ he Lul of R. II. which was made (with reference to the law of M'zuzah) in agreement with the opinions of the Rabbis.

לולב m. (= לבלב; v. לבלב) 1) sprout. Esp. Lulab, the branch of the palm-tree used for the festive wreath on the Feast of Booths (Lev. XXIII, 40); also the festive wreath of the four species combined. Succ. III, 1 הגזל ל׳ וכ׳ a palm-branch unlawfully acquired or one dried up. Ib. 4 אחד ל׳ one branch of the palm-tree is needed for the festive wreath. Ib. 9 לישול ל׳ בידרו היה ולא . ממי a. traveller on the road who had no opportunity of per- forming the ceremony of taking the festive wreath in hand. Ib. לל׳ כשר היום כל the entire day is fit (no special time of the day is designated) for the ceremony &c. Ib. 12; RR. Hash.
