לעג m. (b. h.; preced.) sport, mockery. Erub. 2 1b (ref. to Koh. XII, 12, v. לעג) וכ׳ ל׳ כתיב מי does the text read la ag (mockery)? does it not read lahag (thought)?; v. הנה.

לעוז m. (לעז) speaking a foreign tongue, esp. Greek. Y. Meg. II, beg. 73a בלעז בה יוצא הל׳ כהלכתה כתובה היתה if the Book of Esther was written according to law (in Hebrew), tthe Greek-speaking (reading from it) in Greelk (translation) performs his duty. -- Pl. לעוזות. Mish. ib. lII. 1 וכ׳ והלוע בלע לל׳ אותה קירין Y. ed. (Bab. a. Mish. ללועזות) it is read to those speaking a foreign tongue in their tongue, but the foreigner that heard it in Hebrew &c. Y. ib. לעז (b. h.; cmp. לעג) [to talk, babble,] 1) to speak a for- eign tongue, esp.to speak Greek. Meg. II, 1 1לוע, pl. לועזות,. v. לעוז. -- 2) (v. לוז IV) to talk against, criticise, cast suspi- cion. Pes. 51a וכ׳ כל עליו לעזה the entire country criticised him; a. e. Hif. הלעי same. Y. Shek. V, 4 n some el. of Talm. Babli מלעיזין, v. לוז IV.
לע m. (preced.) 1) foreign tongue, esp. Greek. Meg. 18a יוני בל׳ the la ae (of Mish. II, 1) means Greek. Ib. יוני בל׳ כתובה ש Ms. M. (ed. יונית) written in Greek (trans- lation). Ib. ל׳ בכל in any foreign tongue. Y. b. I, 71b bot.; Y. Sot. VII, 21c top; Esth. R. to I, 22, v. זמר I; a. fr. -- 2) evil talk, disrepute. -- על ל׳ הוציא to spread evil talk against, to cast suspicion, discredit. Kidd. 81a תהא שלא בניה על ל׳ מוציא that you may not (by punishing her for private meeting with a man, v. יחוד) cast suusppicion on the legitimacy of her children. Snh. 43b על ל׳ תוציא אל וכ׳ do not discredit the decision by lots; a. fr.

לעט (b. h.; cmp. לעס) to swallow, glut. Deut. R. s. 1, beg. (ref. to לתרופה, Es. XLVII, 12, cmp. Men. 98a ללהתיו אלמים פה) וכ׳ הימנה ולועט אלם שהוא מי כל whoever is tongue-tied and eats greedily of it (the Law), wilf have his tongue loosened &c. Hif. הלעיט to feed an animal by putting food into its mouth, contrad. to אבס. Sabb. XXIV, 3 מלעיטין אבל but you may put food into the camel's mouth; Gen. R. s. 63 (with ref. to הלעיטני, Gen. XXV, 30); Num. R. s. 21. Tosef. B. Kam. VI, 17, ib. Hull. III (IV), 19 וכ׳ חלתית הלעיטה ir he made the animal eat asafoetida &c.; a. e. -- B. לעי, לעא (v. לאי) 1) to labor, work; to study. Targ. Y. Gen. III, 18; a. fr. - Targ. Prov. XVI, 26 לעיא. - Lev. R. s. 32 טבאות לעי work right (Tanh. Emor 24 ליענות). Ib. s. 34 ונגים לעי אזיל את לית why doest thou not go working and have something to eat? -- Y. Keth. V, 30b top דאינון לעיי because they are working beasts. Y. Sabb. VI, 7d bot. באורייתא לעי והוא that he might be able to study the Law; a. fr. -- Y. Erub.
